It is very tactical. You can chose to play coop missions together with up to three other human players against the A.I., but also fight battles against human players. In coop mode you generally have only a few soldiers to command, while you will have alot when fighting other humans.

In this game you can, unlike in other RTS games, aim and move manually with any unit. It is especially enjoyable with tank combats, since you can chose to focus on taking the enemy tanks' turrets out or, shot its tracks and thus immobilize it, or do flanking manouvers.

The only problem with that (and Soldiers Heroes of WW2, as they are very similar), is you tend to have your hands full when controlling largfe amounts of infantry.

Faces of War, I think was a good game, except for the fact that your small unit of around a few squads mostly, takes on entire companies and somehow wins.

Well, in the first medal of honor, you had yourself (in some missions you had bots who were good at getting themselves killed) and you took entire divisions and won the war by yourself:p

    Cheers...

Yes, that's true. But it is hard to avoid that in player vs A.I. battles. I'm mostly playing Battle Zones in a historical realism mod I'm making, though.

It isn't installed at the moment, so the original:D. How does multiplayer work on this, Co-op?

    1.01 I presume?
Well I think co-op is more fun, because my computer can't handle huge tank battles.
As you have already experienced my poor internet connection, I will not go into detail.

It varies individually. In battles vs human players, where lots of manual control is not needed, I can easily handle several units at a time. I have even won in 1v2 largely because of my ability to control many units at a time effectively (that and my willingness to sacrifice my men, admittingly).

When it comes to Co-op, where manual control is more important, I can handle four soldiers effectively at a time.

I always use the hotkeys to select units, which makes it a whole lot easier. If you don't already use that, you do it by holding Ctrl and a number (Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2, etc.) on the keyboard while having an unit selected.

Depends on what Co-op battle. Some maps have lots of more units on them than battles vs other human players. I'm thinking of maps such as Neuhenhagen and Louvain.

And yes, 1.01 is the original version. The latest patch -version 1.04- can be downloaded here, though. Patches and Fixes: Faces of War v1.04 English Patch - Demo Movie Patch Download Section - GamersHell.com

A little OT, but Red Alert can be strategic when playing with diplomacy -which sadly almost never happens, because everyone wants to play nothing but 1v1, 2v2 and so on. I had a fun battle in Red Alert 2 with 8 players incl. myself, where everyone played on their own with no set teams, but they were free to team as they wished.

In the beginning, I fought another player in a long struggle, resulting in a stalemate. Eventually he was killed by another player, while I survived. I was in horrible shape at that time, with few tanks and a lousy economy. There were two other players left except me. By sending each of them a bunch of private messages, I managed to make them fight each other, while I was building up. In the end, they had almost completely destroyed each other, at which time I swept through both of them with a dozen or so tanks.

I have to agree, though. The majority of RTS games are very plain. There's not much to them than constructing buildings and then spamming certain units to rush with. I would say it is largely because players only want to play with two teams, having an even amount of players on both, which results in the strategical options becoming very limited.

One game that I've enjoyed up to the present day is Panzer Elite, I have both the Psygnosis and the Special Edition disks as well as innumerable downloads of skins missions and other. What keeps this game attractive to me even within Vista is I've adapted commands of my tank to a Thrustmaster HOTAS and this enhaces immersion vastly.

I'm having fun playing Panzer Campaigns: Bulge '44. Battalion level, hex based, 1 km per hex, 2 hours per turn.

Has anyone here tried RUSE? Steam has free beta out right now. Its a RTS and I think it's pretty good.

As far as First person shooters go, Call of Duty United Offensive Multiplayer has been the best and most complete WW2 experience I've had.

    Strategy: Hearts of Iron 3
Tactical: (it's an oldie) V for Victory (V4V) series
    FPS: Call of Duty 2
Boardgame: Squad Leader (although because of the number crunching I rather use a computer nowadays...;))

For single player, I think ALL Call of Duty games are great. There is simply NOTHING like walking in the footsteps (or somewhat) of the soliders. There is just something about it.

As far as Multiplayer, COD United Offensive is probably the best/most complete war experience of the bunch.

For Infantry ONLY, Day of Defeat: Source is probably one of the best out there.

Red Orchestra is great BUT it's simply WAY too realistic. Too realistic takes away from fun factor, but still a great game. Outdated game engine, but there are talks of Unreal 3 engine Red Orchestra.

Also if you already have Red Orchestra there is a new mod called Darkest Hour (or something along the line).

Sure is mate, it is a First Person Shooting, Squad based tactical game, based on a squad size of 4 SAS men in commando type raids. It is the type of game where you chose the men and equipment they carry and how you solve the objective.
