Best World War II Films

No i never seen these movies (like to though).
These movies you have mention has caught my attention cause i presume it's about the RedAmry and the germany Army doing battle instead of the same old movies about American fighting the Germans?

In this case,are the battles in these movies realistic in both side losing alot of men?
Alot of ww2 movies i have watch,it's fake as,not even realistic at all!
I would not mind watching one of those movies you have mention at all.

Talking about best world war movies- I have been thinking of Band of Brothers the British version!
Since the American version i loved and was a great hit,I would love to see a brand new version!

 

Well Heidi , although your wish of a British version might not happen , their will be a new "Band of Brothers" but based about the war in the pacific.

I was lucky enough to catch 5 episodes of BoB on History Channel today with by dad.

I heard about the pacific,but it seems it taking so long to come out!
I much more interested in european ww2 warfare but if great inspatations and Raves come about it,i would differently check the pacific BOB out.

Point of interest, Das Boot, was originally a TV mini-series released in Germany in 1981, it was 5 1/2 hours long. It was one of the most expensive movies ever made in Germany. In 1983 I was living in London and it was shown as a mini-series in the UK. All in German with English subtitles UK TV viewers watched it en masse. It had one of the highest ratings for a show in the UK up to that point. Audiences in the UK loved it. I watched every minute of it, it was really well done.

 

What about Thirty Seconds over Tokyo, God is My Co-Pilot and Go for Broke?
And of course Blake Edward's slap stick What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?
How can you not laugh at that movie. It's insane! LOL I liked Downfall very much. Before, I didn't think anyone could match the acting of Sir Alec Guinness in Hitler: The Last Ten Days, I was wrong. For Casablanca, I agree it's just a Bogart movie on a wartime set. However, Bogey's Action in the North Atlantic is a great merchant marine movie.

 

The best of all time to me are....

Liberation, the arieal scenes are massive, most critics view this as the best.

Next would have to be either Stalingrad or Cross of Iron, and a Bridge to Far...

Has anyone seen Overlord? Very boring but the only WWII film in the Criterion Collection, if that means anything.

what about the Devils Brigade? or El Alemein, Italian film(2002) very good, and Days of Glory, a story About Muslim soldiers in WWII, its a french film very good. I have all of them if you would like learn how to get any of them....of all the new films Days of Glory is by far the best. Trailer is attached,

My favorites are Stalingrad, a tremendous depiction of the horrors of war, Saving Private Ryan, and Letters from Iwo Jima.

 

That's a tough one...i'd say my overall favorite would be Downfall. However, honorable mentions would be: Stalingrad, A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day, and Saving Private Ryan.

 

A movie which wasn't mentioned so far but which I can only recommend is "Die Brücke" (US: The Bridge). It's a German movie by Bernhard Wicki from the year 1959. It tells the story of some Hitlerboys defending a bridge against the American advance in 1945. The action in the movie is quite unrealistic but it depicts really good the attitude of youth under Nationalsocialism and captures the atmosphere of the last days of the war. The equipment and the costumes are quite good (there is a great Panzerfaust scene) and the acting and the camera are also ok.

I know I am going to get into so much trouble here but here goes. I watch most war movies and have trouble with quite a few "american movies" when was the last time americans showed the enemy as just as compassionate about there cause or care for there wounded? They nearly always show the enemy as ruthless and uncaring.A fine example is savng private ryan. when they attack the radar staion, there medic , Wade, is wounded and dies ,so they attack the sole german survivor and torture him by beating him and making him dig his own grave after burying the 3 paratroopers and wade. and accuse him of killing their friend! What about his friends , theyre all dead? If that scene was shown with role reversal, i.e. an american was sole survivor and the germans did what that patrol did, it would have caused an outrage. Same as the japanese. its been proven that they went out of ther way to save thier wounded. Yes they were animals to prisoners and cilivans in occupied countries and islands and they deserved what happened to them but they were compassionate to thier own. I have only ever seen two war films that i believe were truly accurrate , das boot, made by germans and a Japenese film about troops on either iwo jima or okinawa. this film had no battle scenes but just showed how the japenese troops struggled to survive after the battle was almost over, starving, cannabalism. and thier struggle to get to the last line of defence.
I am not in defence of either country for what they did in the war but this forum is about war movies and I'm just saying about accurate portrayals.
I'll quote my grandfather, an original 39er, who fought the germans and Italians and the Japanese, " I'll forgive the Germans, I'll always hate the Japanese and I just want to forget the Americans"

 

I agree you never see how the Germans felt in battle or in orther scenarios its all just Amricans and how they felt. I'm not meaning too be rude really.

Got to say i thought stalingrad was excellent also.

 

The best movie I have ever seen is Sophie Scholl: The Final Days. It's a wartime movie about Nazis and the White Rose resistance. It's also voted the best foreign language film (I saw it in German).

 

Just watched Fires on the Plain aka:Nobi (1959). It is a powerful depiction of Japanese soldiers left to fend for themselves in the Phillipines in 1945. Quite bleak, grim, and despairing. Even cannibalism is hinted at as the soldiers slowy starve.

This movie is in German with English subtitles. It touches upon a subject not too often talked about, namely mixed marriages (Aryan and Jewish) in Germany circa 1940.

In many cases, the Aryan spouse of a mixed marriage simply divorced in order to wipe the slate clean. Often, along with the desertion of the spouse came the desertion of the family.

This movie made me somewhat misty and I am at an age where that doesn't happen too often.

This movie is available instantly on Netflix.

To name three American Films that portray Germans and Japanese in a humane light, just off the top of my head. There are more should I choose to dig.

 

I watched Defiance the other day and enjoyed it quite a bit.

 

I concur......I would like to see more of the story.
