well guys/gals I am going through some 1700 fotos of my recent trip along the Rhein with Familie from Basel Switzerland to Amsterdam, Netherlands. Don't worry I am not going to make a huge deluge on the site but will post a few pics of my terrible photos skills just for a little fun ......... can you guess the Fortress on the ridge from one of the Markt squares ? it's an older camera so am trying to figure how to remove the date(s)
thanks will go back to the beginning of sorts. left Sac A/F in Cali flew to Chicago, lay over another 9hrs to Frankfurt and the 6 of us are getting goonie so my bro and I started making faces at everyone in Frankfurt including security .........mistake as they started making some serious comments one eye open the other closed we rushed into a very nice high class restaurant for breakfast and I ordered the typcial Bavarian Weißwurst und Bier and interesting enough the owner of the restaurant personally came out to deliver it and asked me if I knew what I was eating ? of course I said and told him in high German. He was quite pleased with a slurred sehr gut ! we finished up breakfast with all things ~ Mauskuchen, dang that was yummie and went down well with Kaffe mit Sahne another hour we flew over the Alpen into Basel, Switzerland which we had another 2 hour layover till we got bussed to our beautiful cruise ship ~
if we hadn't had enough food we were served a light lunch which looked like dinner, trying to stay awake for Euro time in the dining hall, many White Schwans were "goofing off" around the ship trying to get us to toss a snack through the windows. the little ones can be quite overbearing and protective of their surroundings as they were when I visited Bayern some years ago near the Alpsee after lunch a couple of needed moments to rest the eys ... Wachs Auf ! dang onto one of 3 buses for the drive through the Alsace bordering Germany/France. Incredible Wine country rolling hills of vines, Hapsburg Castles on the forefronts overlooking their domain. fields of wheat and corn, old cobbled streets ....... did I mention this drive was on the Tour de France 2 years ago or so ? cyclists making me drool wishing my bike was with me........... a fast pic through the curved windows of the Bus.....next time I need Martin B. to give me a hand taking pics to eliminate the glare
crazy we dozzed off and on well at least 9/10th of the group did while the guide did her best to keep us entertained, the winding road into the Wine Centre Colmar was gorgeous. Old Medieveal plaster/brick and wooden buildings everywhere one could not tell of any bomb damage during the war water is life blood to the old markt and squares not able to get any truck traffic due to the narrowness in part on the old cobbled streets and lanes, canal boats due the job of carrying the necessary supplies to store and restaurant....... and of course one could not forget the age of some of these facades ~
sadly I saw A/C outsdie of Speyer at the TEchnik Museum but that was a flash as we were on the bus from spot to spot .......... my Mrs. with Camera in hand in Colmar thirsty ??
Superb pics, Erich - I can't believe it's exactly a year since I was in Colmar ; it's a fascinating town.....
thank you Gentlemen, 3 more pics for the day until I have time to go through my bros fantastic pic collection of this trip...... the Bakers Haus ~ ......... look familiar Martin ? the Unterlinden Museum within a former convent this art lure draws some 100,000 plus visitors every year, my wife caught some flowers via a covered courtyard she just had to take : and the culmination of the Museum which is really set up a bit strange, you walk into a rather large, dark hall divided by false walls and a ton of art-paintings in a very dim-lit sphere at the far end is the famous Retable d' Issenheim bei Matthais Grünewald. quite an impressive piece of work and we were reluctant to take any photos of any of the old pieces flash or not, but ......... :
Since nobody gave you an answer about your first question: I recognized the Heidelberger Schloss (did you actually walk all the way up hill? )Great pics Erich . I made almost the same trip last year when I drove from Alsace to Heidelberg via Speyer and then Ludwighshafen. Next time I'll take you with me, you 'd be an excellent photographer.
Fantastic shots E!!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Question bitte, the first pic, What Schloss is that? it sure does resemble the Heidelberg Schloss from down below. If it aint Heidelberg, this one sure if very close to it in design and color. I took a ship-load of pics most I still have not yet developed but will someimte-if not ruined? Anyway, most of my Heidelberg shots were after 6PM on a very misty evening. I recently ran across some but, there are all up on H-town. Anyway, glad you had some fun on that trip. I briefly made Switzerland (about 36 Hrs) and only saw Zurich (from the train station) down to Rickenbach, and then took a short car trip to Solothurn Old Arsenal. That place was a fantastic place to visit. Did you by chance-get to eat at Zum Roten Ochsen im Heidelberg? Also, whilest in Switz/ did you ever try any Rosti?
Carl you nailed it like Skipper, it is the Heidelberg Schloss/Fortress which went through many many changes over the centuries with a long history. the second one the nice yellow handsome building is the Wein Estate of Schloss Vollrads above and slightly south of Rüdesheim ..... more on these two later, just going through so many pics wondering how many to put on before I am banned for overdoing my quota of photos for the thread/site Skipper after we left Colmar still on the bus we drove through the hills with villages ~ German and French names to Riquewihr and then onward to Obernai before our final leg this day to our ship docked at Strasbourg and then cruised north up the Rhein to Speyer which is another story unto itself........ Skip back to the Fort on the hill we drove by bus on that narrow road you are familiar with then just a few of us got off and climbed up and joined the group.
Hey Erich thanx for the piccies, it reminded me when i was in Germany 18 years back, yeah great memories. Kepp em coming. v.R
Wow great pics Erich. It looks like you had a lot of fun. It really makes me miss living in Germany. Keep the pics coming.
three parting shots from Colmar before the road heads northward through the vines ~ another interesting piece of architecture and I'm getting real thirsty: hey if your in wine country then ........... magnificent old wine barrels
