Well, untill a few months ago, I spent many hours a week on WWII and my site. I do hope to get back to that, but recently it has been a measely few hours a months....which caused me to have withdrawal sympthoms....
I wish i could be more involved in it. I actually considered being a college history professor but theres just so much about the era that i dont know about. I guess it would help if i went back to school as well haha. I do enjoy logging on here though and finding all of the information that i do. Its pretty cool when you can strike up a convo with someone and actually have them listen to what youre saying because they get interested in the war.
I probably spend too much time on WWII - reading, watching docs/movies, surfing the net, listening to the music.... My reading goes in spurts, too - I will read nothing but WWII for months, several books at a time. But then I will need a break and read some light fiction or a Christian book... Almost all TV/Movies are WWII - History International and Military Channel are my favorites... And then there comes the music...American Swing, German underground swing, German "Nazi-approved", Russian war songs.... And now I find this wonderful place to find more time to spend on WWII!!!! My husband thinks I'm nuts...I was so excited last weekend to find a brass WWII Sweetheart Charm Bracelet at a garage sale for fifty cents....I cleaned it up and wear it constantly, gazing at the service insignia charms over and over.....thinking about the victory garden the girl grew who owned the bracelet.....wondering if she was unlucky enough to recieve a Western Union notice.... If you can't be fascinated by that..... Lisa
Quite a bit, I'm doing a fair amount of research for a writing project and like most history it's really easy to imagine you know it all from a couple of books, and then the more you read you realise how little you do know, so you end up reading more with the very real danger of coming to a point where you can quite rightly claim you know next to nothing.
I've recently become obsessed especially with the combat on the eastern front. I have a huge soft spot for the Russians.
Well, I'm only 18, but WWII has always been a part of my life. When I visited my dad every other weekend as a child, we would watch nothing but History Channel documentaries, Hogan's Heroes, and old war flicks on AMC. Stalag 17 quickly became my favorite movie of all time (and quoted it whenever possible). I even replaced the childhood fear of monsters under the bed and stepping on sidewalk cracks with the irrational fear of being sniped from a neighboring window and stepping on landmines. My childhood has never been a happy one, and so I lived in my daydreams as much as possible. Those daydreams had me in the European Theater trying to save soldiers from both sides, yet still remain loyal to America. I even began writing veterans and making penpals with them. (One was an American GI, the other a German SS Panzergrenadier) I began reading WWII first-hand account books at a very early age and haven't stopped. Even now, I'm of the belief I was born in the wrong decade. I began a novel at the age of 8 that was about "me" (thought named differently) time traveling back to WWII and surviving and interacting with the soldiers (both American and German). I recently found it again, and decided to rewrite it. So, yeah...WWII has had a big impact on my life thusfar. Even though it took the lives of so many, it gave me life during some of the darkest days of my existance.
I'm sorry, but I just had to chuckle at that! many a time I have gone in the garage at night to have a cigarette and keep the service door shut because I can only imagine a german coming through the door!!! (Direct result of playing too much Call of Duty)...and i'm 40! Enjoy the ride during your research and quest for WWII knowledge! You have many years to enjoy it! Lisa
holiday destinations: Well when I walk on a beach I sure am not looking for sea shells, my pictures are not the usual touristic attractions.... Playing games: I go as far a Panzer General or even Wolfenstein Films: Stalingrad, Das Boot etc.. Internet: daily research + moderation . friends: WW2 buffs and veterans, so yes I am obsessed by WW2 too
A lot... Id say 75% of my reading is ww2 related... I also go to the VA with My son To visit and drive vets who can no longer drive to theyre appointments...Its funnny i can hardly Stand seeing stuff on Somalia or iraq and stan because its so biased or plain Bullshit.... it kinda makes me Sad ww2 vets are passing on a lot lately... Tom brokaw Summed it up correctly when he caled them "THE GREATEST GENERATION" I often use WW2 Heroes to teach My cadets Simple things Like DUTY HONOR COUNTRY.... I try to impart and Force them to LEARN from the past....
I like the fact that you use the experience of the WWII vets in your teaching. We'd be nothing without our roots and the Old (Greatest) generation has certainly a lot to teach us, so sad that fewer and fewer of them are left. The worst is when I find out in an Ob that such and such a neigbour was a vet because they would not talk when they were alive...
I admire a lot of theyre humbleness about theyre service... to them it was a job that had to be done and Theyd do it all over again and not regret it... I admire that I love seeing the younger members taking an avid interest in the war... but sadly a lot of em Dig the Nazis I dont get it.... Or some Dont have a clue... Theyve been sitting around watching MTV theyre whole lives... and become Pussified in the process... I dont get admiring or calling some dude who can Play a childrens game (IE FOOTBALL BASEBALL BASKETBALL you PICK) who makes millions of dollars to do it a hero...
when the girlfriend is not around,ww2 is my main thought.all my reading is ww2.i have a garage of books, all in airtight containers.trouble is ,i dont know what books are where, labels are reqd i think.lee..
I guess I'm a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type. I read compulsively on WWII, American Civil War, American Revolution, ancient history.... Well, you get the picture.
Lisa, as Kai, says in his response to this one - we certainly do! The Forum has helped me realize how many more like me there are. It was here that I first saw postings like yours from other women who were as interested in the topic as I. Fortunately, my husband is generally patient about it and while he's not likely to join a Forum like this one, he too becomes interested and watches the WWII movies and documentaries I want to watch. I've always been into movies or documentaries about WWII. It's only been in the last few years I've been able to spend the money on the books I see and of course the Internet made it possible to find all kinds of information. On any given day, probably about 25 - 35% of my freetime will have some connection to WWII. As wotnochad says, I start researching something for the book I'm writing about my parents - and the more I research the more I feel I need to know - which then leads into more reading and searching. As you can tell by some of my posts, I also want to share what I've learned so the Forum has given me a great venue! However, today is not one of the days I get to spend as much time as I would like!
