Hello JW. I see your from Alabama, my dads old stomping grounds! He was from Hanceville Alabama, Cullman County. I have deep roots there, 1820. My dad was in the 6th armored infantry, 1st armored division. He landed at Arzew, Nov. 8th, 1942 and was in North Africa for the entire American Campaign and the invasion of Italy. He passed away in 1997.
I'm a bit south of there, near Montgomery. Don't think just because you are stuck up there in Elvis-land that you can't come back home. The door is always open.
Hi Philip -- Welcome to the forum! You will enjoy your time here and I hope that we get to hear some of the stories that your Dad may have passed down to you. If your family was in Alabama in 1820, might your forebears also have fought for the South in the War of Northern Aggression? ;-)
Wow, talk about a warm welcome! Thanks! Most of my dads story telling was when I was a young one. I will share what I can recall in the proper forum. I have a copy of a newspaper clipping of an interview of him when he went home. As for the Civil War...........my great great grandfather was in Co. C, 29th Alabama and was killed at the Battle or Resaca of the Atlanta Campaign. He is buried at Resaca Confederate Cemetery. His name was William J Bland.
Here is the thread on my dads story. Kind of short right now but will add to it. http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-general/26144-my-dads-wwii-story.html#post316086
