My thoughts only,I don't think anyone's opinion is wrongand my opinion is not FACTS ok Yes, How? Russia and America was involed and brought with them feash new troops and a huge red army that tip the balance for the Allies. No,How? Without America and Russia England had no major surrport. England had Royal navy and RAF but with England's Allies being much weaker than she was, had to do it alone with no support at all, there fore would of been over run by the nazi's. Just what i thought of would of happend, ther's no facts in there. Operration Overlord, i know about it, but i Have limited knowleadge about what accurred, so i'm keeping my mouth shut on this topic.
It is my understanding that Eisenhower how no intention whatsoever of taking Berlin. It had been decided by Churchill, Stalin and FDR (at Yalta?) that Russia would take Berlin and divide it up later. Eisenhower had no intention of spending allied lives taking something that was going to go to the Russians in any case. John.
Yeah i heard that as well, But didn't they argued over it first, then the allies just gave Russia Berlin? I'm in doubt. What you just mentioned, did that cause the Cold War?
The US Government has considered the Cold War to have offically started as of 2 Sept 45. And the Allies did NOT just GIVE the Soviets Berlin.
There is this also. "U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower lost his interest in the race to Berlin and saw no further need to suffer casualties in attacking a city that would be in the Soviet sphere of influence after the war. General Eisenhower foresaw excessive friendly fire if both armies attempted to occupy the city at once." Battle of Berlin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I read you're post information, and so there was no arguing over berlin at all? I believe you're statement.
Once it was decided that Berlin would be in the Soviet occupation sector there was no need. Some generals thought that the Allies should have taken it. But the Politicians were the ones that untimately made the decisions. They for damn sure did not want to start WWIII with the Soviets over a city of no real value.
I see your point but if it were me i would amend that to 1927 { or whenever the year was that Lenin Died and uncle joe took over } During the Lennin years there was a large desire among the Bolshevic leadership to gain assistance from foreign powers in assisting them in the modernization of Mother russia. This feeling of hands across ect. permiated many of the foreign policies of the early Soviet Govt. In the west to there was a great deal of adiration among the {thinking classes} particularly in the Cinema Industry. This is best illustrated by a visit to the Soviet Union in 1923 by the Founding members of a new Hollywood studio,United Artists. These were Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, his wife Mary Pickford { Americas original Darling } Charlie Chaplin and the man who is credited{wrongly} of creating the first feature film. D.W.Griffiths. But once Stalin was in power and the purges began and fear for ones life became the rule of thumb in any decision making. The cold war was ON! Any way just agreeing with you in a round about fasion cheers and keep an eye out for a pers message from me i'm cooking up an idea for our prime minister. Cheers
As i just mentioned Patton was the most vocal of those who thought that berlin should of been on the menu which others had the same idea Montgomery i suppose just to tit for tat with Patton?
Yeah I noticed that . Its pretty well known that he was one of the ones most vocal. There were others of course.
The argurement was between Patton-America and motty-England over who should take Berlin?.Sorry for going on about it but just want the correct answer and i just like talking about ww2.
JC, surely enough quotes abound from Churchill regarding Berlin, he made no secret of his concerns on the other view...military getting involved in politcs where Ike was concerned over the Berlin decision, even once more wanting his removal. The statement regarding politicos not wanting the problem of Berlin doesnt stand where one of the major characters of the time was of the opposite view. But yes it was ultimately a political decision but not judged to be the correct one by all of them. Churchills and Britanis influence had by then long been eclipsed. But his views should be known.
