A few days in the Hurtgen Forest

JagdPanther44, the first item would almost look like the cover of a German tincan, but the 4cm size rules that out. I would go for a cap, lid for some kind of amno. Could the second item be a cap too or maybe a shaving/drinking cup. It's hard to tell , they would need some cleaning. Boiling water will take off some of rust and earth without damage.

 

Deep breath and total, off-the-wall guess about mystery item #2 - but could it be the tip of an armour-piercing shell ?

I don't think it's a cup of sorts as the metal is too heavy a gauge.

I'd be more inclined to go along with Martin's theory of it being part of a shell, but I can't see any signs of a screw thread on it.

I'll give it a clean and see what it reveals.

 

This is part of the packaging from complete artillery rounds ,see the attatched drawing,i have a modern example same style,i will try dig it out tomorrow and take a photo

 

I agree with martin on the other unknown item as been part of an armour piercing shell.To me it looks like the penetrator cap/piercing cap again these are found in many shapes.These can be found attatched to the round either by spot weld or crimping..

Heres a couple of photos with the MODERN packing clips i have,we also occasionaly find ones in similar condition to yours
note the black one was converted into a large wrench ,it does not come with a handle welded on but you can still clearly make out what it is,Also ive shown how the ring fits into the slots on the fuzes to stabilise the fully packaged rounds when in transit

Wow jagdpanther44, Amazing stuff you've shown here. Thank you for sharing. I'd love to be able to camp near the Hurtgen Forest and explore. Is it as quiet and serene as it looks in those photos?

The forest and surrounding area are beautiful, and the calmness and serenity, especially in the forest, is very soothing.

On a number of occasions, I took time out and imagined what it must have been like to be there 60+ years ago.

K98 in a fox hole







Its now beeing cleaned up so I will post some more pictures when its done
Here are some more pictures of the area
There was a burnt layer in fox hole and still some burnt wooden stock near the magazien, the bolt is missing and its slightly bent, again near the magazien area
beacuse of positions being taken and retaken the first thing (when time allowed) the Americans ( and no dought the Germans) did was to distroy the enermys wepons, it looks like its had the stock broken round a tree

I also found a US 50 cal casing in the same hole so I think I was used by both armys
