Russian nuclear bomber flies undetected to within 20 miles of Hull | Mail Online A Russian nuclear stealth bomber was able to fly within 90 seconds of the British coast without being picked up by radar, it was revealed today. The supersonic ‘Blackjack’ jet flew completely undetected to within just 20 miles from Hull in one of the worst breaches of British security since the end of the Cold War. RAF radar eventually picked up the plane, but the only two pairs of fighter jets used for air alerts were on other duties. The embarrassing breach late last year has called into question Britain's defence capabilities after four jet squadrons were cut from the RAF’s budget four years ago.
The bad part is actually that the "Blackjack" despite radar absorbing materials is not really a "stealthy" aircraft. Probably the Blackjack was a Tu-160PP, since Russia is aware about Britains lack in airspace surveilance which places its trust on land based radar, which a Tu-160PP is mostly able to deal with. Time for Britain to think about MEADS (Rather then aircraft carriers) and its anti jamming capability through seperation surveilance UHF Band and X Band 4-5 GHz. Regards Kruska
I read the story as Britain's Defense embarassed because they were not on the job by allowing the bomber to get close. I agree with Kruska, the Russians do not have a stealth bomber even thought the Blackjack, like the American B-1 bomber, have 'stealthy' designs but only minimize the radar signature from a distance.
Hi Miguel, I saluted you for remembering Matthias Rust and his flight. I remember this vividly and at how embarassed the Russians were. Anyway, he was who I immediately thought ot-when I first started reading this thread.
