I am looking to discuss the many different ways of mounting a scope (modern or old) to the Kar98k rifle. I have found many varieties, and have found nothing sufficient enough to put a serious scope on the rifle without permanent modification. At the disappointed of these results, I decided to design my own system of point quite literally ANY optic you could want to put on your Kar98k.

Before I reveal my design, I would like to hear what anyone has to say about the current availability of scope kits for the Kar98k, any experiences, or hear/say would be fine. Pictures welcome too!

After we have a general idea of what ALL the options are, I will reveal my design and we can discuss its pros and cons. I want to produce and sell this system, so if I get all the tweaks worked out, that would be perfect. I guarantee no one has made something like this yet, so I'll leave you in suspense until we are done discussing all the scope mounting options to a Kar98k.

The 1st, and probably most popular is the scout scope mount:
Scope Kit K98 Includes Scout Mount & 4X32 Scope - $89.00 : Buymilsurp.com, Your source for military surplus.

As this system is the most basic and does not alter the rifle permanently, many prefer this choice. To me, this rifle is capable of far more optical power than a scout scope...

Another system is the bolted on version. This requires an inlet groove and a few other interior modifications to the barrel channel of the stock. If you scroll down to the bottom of THIS page, you will find the system, along with a bolt modification kit that is not required, but recommended.

One system that I thought had high hopes until I saw the customer reviews, was THIS. Personally I think it is ugly, and from what I've heard it is not solid by any means. This system also may or may not require the bolt mod, depending on the style of your bolt handle.

On THIS page on ebay, you can see the clamp on system, this among the last to be mentioned are the 2 most unpopular due to the required smithing and modifications. This will also only fit very specific scopes, not giving you a lot of choices. It is also tactically disadvantageous due to the elevation of the scope off the top of the receiver.

The last to be mentioned, with no link because this one is self-explanatory, is the standard drill and tap of the top of the chamber and back of receiver and the attachment of weaver or picatinny rails. This offers more flexibility than the clamp, but again, requires permanent modification to the rifle, and may or may not require the bolt modification as well. Now as for my system...

Like the scout base, this replaces the rear sight assembly.

It is full length, constructed out of either steel or aluminum. Very solid and stable. Medium profile rings work great for a 50mm objective such as mine pictured. I have also come across some very useful accessory rails that should eliminate the need to modify the bolt handle. Should your bolt not clear the scope, try a pair of THESE. It locates the scope on a 45° angle so the bolt can reach its vertical position and pass freely.

Well this wraps it up, and I hope I have given everyone some knowledge and options on scope mounting. This rifle is very capable of sniping ranges, which is another reason it was picked by the British to assassinate Hitler, despite the operation never being executed.
