My avatar is a photo of Roger Bushell, known as X or Big X, the mastermind of many allied escapes from German stalags including the "Great Escape" from Luft Stalag 2. His escape from Luft Stalag 2 resulted in his recapture. He and 50 other escapees from Luft Stalag 2 were murdered on direct orders from Hitler.

 

Ok cheers for that, interesting fellow would like to hear more about him. I've been looking at so many old photos of some of those fellows they sometimes tend to blur.

Also now i'm a bit confused when you refer to the great escape. I would presume you refer to the three tunnel plan in which ultimately only one tunnel was used on Mar.24th a mass breakout by prisoners in Luft Stalag (Sagan) by 75 POW 50 subsiquently executed on recapture by Gestapo (Hitlers orders) Tony Burcher of 617 was involved in this escape and managed to evade all the way to Poland. His tale is told in another thread or post. My query is this i always thought i had read that this was Luft Stalag III. Am i mistaken and if so my bad.
