    Former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was beaten by medieval prince Alexander Nevsky in a poll held by a TV station to find the greatest Russian.

    Stalin came third, despite being responsible for the deaths of millions of Soviets in labour camps and purges.

    Think he would have won it if the shows producer hadnt asked the public to vote for someone else a while back according to the same story...

    What ever happened to Rasputin...a worthy winner by any ones standards....

    IMHO too bad that Stalin didn't became a first. He had all chances.

    PS. This project is stupid, I think. Because Russia have large history and there were many people who could cary this title.

    Thank you very much!

    They probably died during construction works on the "Adolf Kanone" located on Trondenes in Northern Norway.

    Posting one more picture for you to see the location.

    Still have that "Stockholm syndrome" going even generations later? The man was a total disaster-enforcing an unworkable economic system on the country and backing it up with an iron fist that killed millions and left the very demographics of the country changed unto this day. His bunglings during the early days of The GPW are well documented and cost the whole of the Western USSR army. If the war finally did get turned around it was only because Stalin was afraid for his own hide and finally hired some professionals. Industrialization? Well I guess I can give Iosip Vasarionovich some points on that one-though it could have been done more efficiently and at less human cost under a mixed economic system. But in all the USSR would have been infinitely better off today if Kerensky, Trotsky, the Tsar-anybody but Stalin would have taken power.

    That was because he did not live long enough, if he had lived a few years more (well, a few centuries more...) you can bet Uncle Joe would have found a way to make the others into "non-persons" :D

    Hi;
    THE WORST DISASTERS EVER TO BEFALL RUSSIA.

    1. The Black Plague
    2. The Mongol Invasion
    3. Iosip Stalin
    4. Adolf Hitler

    I guess it's only the power of myth that keeps him in high estimation in some quarters.

    His name is Iosif! Not Iosip! Sometimes you guys call him Josef, but the correct name is Iosif!

    And he was one of the best leaders that Russia ever had! Long live comrade STALIN! Eternal memory to this greatest man in Russian history!

    SM;
    I guess I would disagree-and why is Russia not now the richest and most influential country on Earth? She has always had the natural and human resources to become so. It was the chasing of myths that deprived Russia of her greatness. Myths do not build things.
    Here is a recent NY times article on the new Stalin Cult; The New Stalin Cult - Times Topics Blog - NYTimes.com

    PS. So is IosiF Visarionovich back on the icons? I think I will light a candle tonight and thank my various ancestors for jumping on those cattle boats.

    " Long live comrade Stalin " ????????

    I'm sorry Mr. Ruskie, but I'm just a plain ole American, where vodka is our 3rd most favorite drink.

    How in the world do you consider this....... TYRANT anything but a frikin nut case ?? JeffinMNUSA hit it right on the head on the previous post about all of your countries resourses and nothing but centuries of misserable leaders and crimes against your own people.

    Stalin murdered millions before the " Patriotic War ". He led hundreds of thousands of brave soldiers to slaughter in many battles during the war because after all they are only humans ! ( Berlin and other battles)

    On June 24, 1945 as a victorious parade rolled through The Red Square, Stalin was already planning the exile of a great military leader, General Zhukov. The political machine was destroying his reputation and the paranoid Stalin was planning his exile. Zhukov's colleagues were forced to give false statements about the great Zhukov or face Stalin. He was exiled to the Urals Military District.

    Finally with the death of the idiotic Stalin in 1953, and the rise to power of Nakita Kruschev, also a veteran of the " Patrioic War ", Zhukov was appointed Defense Minister in 1955. His greatest momment was when Forgein Minister Molotov and his followers wanted to return to a Stalin-like leadership, the great Zhukov was qoted " We can not stand for that, if you are compeled to oppose the party I will call on the Army and our people ''.

    On May 8,1965 Zhukov appeared on the podium at the Kremiln Palace of Congresses. He was finally able to hear the shouts of " Hurrah for Zhukov ".

    The Great Stalin, what a joke !!
