I'm surprised that some of the more "innovative" tabloids are not making more out of this. First PM Brown get's his "gift", and now the Queen get's her "gift". If I was editor for a tabloid fully focused on bending the truth I'd say that President Obama was spoiling for a fight.

The possible follow ups are endless.
"PRESIDENT PICKS HIS NOSE IN PARLIAMENT"
"FIRST LADY IMPRESSED AT LORD HAW HAW"
"PRESIDENT SCRATCHES HIS SCROTUM DURING PM's SPEECH"
"FIRST LADY ADRESS THE QUEEN AS SISTAH"

Well I'm sure they tried, but even the tabloid readers are getting tired of this, at least I hope. The media will now focus on the kids this French gave to Obama in Starsbourg.:D

    Interesting article from the times:

Video: Protocol is abandoned as Michelle Obama cosies up to Queen - Times Online

"When Michelle Obama put her arm round the Queen at Buckingham Palace, some of the more excitable elements of the media - particularly the Americans - suggested she may have been guilty of a breach of protocol.

They missed the real story, however. What was far more interesting was that the Queen put her arm round the First Lady."

Her Majesty dealt with the situation perfectly, it seems the protocol has been changed for quite some time but whether this is the case or not she clearly took control of the situation. She also seems to have put the Italian PM in his place which is no bad thing.

Let's face it, at least the Obamas were respectful and warm, better than Bush describing the senior head of state in Europe (IIRC) as 'kinda cute.'

The whole thing is understandable. Including this thread.

Its not much different from the UK in 1997. We had a party that had been in power for 18 years never mind 8.

So expectations were high on one side.

The other side had taken a lot of ribbing before Tony got in. And this was then met by alternative ribbing by the guys who supported party that had just been thrown out.

Its not pretty but it happens.

My own view is, and I voted for Tony's mob in 97, is that expectations are never met, especially after so many years of waiting.

I cannot ever bring myself to be that interested in what a politcian says anymore or any hype about what they said, who they shook hands with, winkied at laughed with or at.

I was fooled by oratory, Education, education, education being one of the main ones.

I now find myself party less and not bothered about the system anymore.

Therefore when I saw Obama coming into his own in States, I thought that will at least make a change from the present occupier. But I didnt get too intereseted...I still am not...

Cynically, I see a love fest in the order of the love fest Tony Blair induced. The orratory, the hope, the pride, which is acceptable...

I just dont believe any of it anymore..

Not until actions are produced over words and glad handing..

I really couldnt care if any of us vote in a goat anymore as long as they take the right actions.

I wont vote for any of em...as I've said before, my role now is to always vote locally and nationally for the person standing against the present incumbent...on the premise that the one in power has been there long enough to do some damage, time to lose your job.

    Cynical but there you go.

I see in Obama..Tony Blair...I hope not...But the Simon Cowell adulation etc seems familiar from somewhere.

I always have a copy of the daily mail hanging on the wall, of the toilet, from a nail. Strong, soft, thoroughly absorbent and about what it deserves!

So, The Daily Mail, is it a real newspaper or a tabloid type scandal sheet like the National Enquirer we have here, with the headlines reading like this, "ufo lands and steals man's head and craps in it before flying off - aliens overheard saying 'just wait'll they see what comes out now!'"

Stefan would have you believing that one no doubt A58, and Richard will be fuming away merrily. Not quite to that standard I'm afraid.

We have the Daily sport for that, but its also a pornographic paper so some say..I ve never had a copy so cant say myself...although I know someone who has.

The mail is a sort of middle class or pretensions to middle class Britain read.

It has its fair share of right wing looney stories dressed up as news as does the Daily Mirror to a lesser extent on the left side of things to a working class or pretensions to working class newspaper. Can you have a pretension to being working class...dont know...But the mail will have no talk of anything that does its perception of Britain, or more likely England down in any way. Be it those dastardly Europeans wanting our pound in exchange for a Euro, or those immigration types who want to change our way of life...dont mention the single mothers...unless they are war widows, they should be shot or at least have their cigarettes and wine taken away.

The Mail on Sunday is a holiday advert paper mostly, but includes details of sporting achievements and political bias, sorry comment as all our papers do.

I dont like any of em...they are all similar and appeal to a biased view or you wouldnt buy the title you do, be it Mail, Express, Sun, Mirror, Telegraph, Times, Guardian, Observer, or Independant, although I freely admit to my bias for the Independant. Goes both ways at times...Not that I do..we are still talking politics here..
Morning Star still exists and is quite a good read...front page, kill capatalism but rest is qute sun or mirror like. Being a communist paper its quite surprising the change in its attitude.

But to answer your question, no its not like your enquirer, but it does have it fare share of raging but then they all do.

One thing most have in common is their admiration of Adolf in the 30's, but then again so did quite a few of our politicians. The Independant stands out as a bastion of freedom where Hitler was concerned...they did not back him...they did not even mention him, he was none existant to them...a great paper then...one I chose and chose well...

Then again the Independant was only born in 80's but I'm sure it would have disliked him.

I reckon those publications can be viewed online - correct? I might pull up a copy to see what is going on from time to time. Everyone has their own views on things, and depending on what we read here (and believe) formulates our view of things over there. I'm sure y'all have the same picture painted by viewing rants from select individuals on our side of the pond too. That goes both ways too, the theory, not me, like you, not that I like you, I do but not that way you know....

So you dont all wear 6 gallon hats...Carl was telling me fibs....Ive been to America...once for business twice for Mickey Mouse....Disney was full of Brits and Germans so couldnt tell what a real American was...except they all seem to wear costumes and look like cartoon characters....

I took this view to the business trip I had there too...It was quite different...and I packed a Donald duck hat on purpose and yet no one at the meeting in Culpepper was dressed as a cartoon...I was thrown by that...

10 gallon hats? Those are out of style and have been for several years. Everybody knows that.:D

Undoubtably, you have never been to the real US, as Disney is certainly not a mirror of the country. It is one man's dream world.

Come to Alabama and I will show you the US, or at least my little portion of it. It will surprise you as we are not as we are portrayed on the tube or in movies. We actually have 'lectricity, running water and indoor toliets. I do drive a pickup truck, and I laugh when I see my neighbor's son load the lawn mower up into their mini-van to go mow a yard.

Ah yes , the real US. Though most of us on this side of the pond know what that is, it's less easy to define, isn't it? Kind of like the "Aunt Minnie Method" of reading x-ray films (radiographs). Oh sure, all of us could point her out in the picture, no doubt. However, coming up with a desciption that would allow anyone to identify her would be an entirely different matter. Disney isn't it, that's for sure. And I'm certain the same corollary is in play for Great Britain and the rest of the world as well.

Having lived outside of the US for a couple of years, it certainly was educational to see what people thought my "home" was like based on their exposure to the media. Couldn't have been farther from my reality, but I couldn't convice them of that. I fear that lack of real communication and understanding because of traditional news and entertainment media, especially across borders, plays the biggest role in separating peoples. I remain hopeful that the "Informatio Age" will go a long way in correcting that. Forums like this might be positive example. Well, most of the time anyway!

One of the difficulties in describing the "real" US has to do with its size. The large land area coupled with geographic diversity would leave even the most well intentioned to having a stroke. It's hard to convey the scale of the country with enough accuracy to make sense. Try comparing the Rockies with the Great Plains, or the rural South to the urban Northeast. Its enough to boggle the mind. I taught geography to 12 year olds, and since most of them had never been anywhere, it was a riot watching them come to grips with places they'd only heard or read about. In addition to the geography, consider the differences among the people, as well. Plunk a New Yorker down in Iowa, or vice versa, and the result is pretty much culture shock. If you look closely at some of the responses from the Rogues from different parts of the country, you can begin to get a sense of the diversity we have. The view from my little part of the country is vastly different from many others. I'm not sure any of us has a handle on what the "real" US is like.
