I was wondering what division and what theater this tank (801) fought in? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Unless you have a picture of the back of the turret, or a "fender" it's going to be tough. I could assume, from what I could find that, it is part of the 8th SS Panzer Regiment of the "Das Reich" division and was commanded by SS-Hauptscharführer Ott ( in 1942)............ that of course is assuming that Regiment traded in it's Tigers for Panther's and the Hauptscharführer did not meet his demise. And I will cite my source: 8./SS-Pz.Rgt.2 (DR)
sorry f.jughead but the II Abteilung of Das Reich in 44-45 had Pz IV's, the Ist Abt. had 4 Kompanies of Panthers it does not necessarily mean as it is an 801 Panther that it is W-SS though could be for the 5th W-SS Pz. "Wiking"
That particular Panther never saw action, or axis deployment. Like the Bovington example it's one of the 'British built' productions knocked up under REME postwar. It used to reside at Shrivenham in the UK. (Notice the IR equipment, or facsimile thereof, mounted on the cupola too). As to the scheme they've chosen; there's no guarantee it's not just pure conjecture, but... if it is based on a real unit it might be as well to trawl through those few that got their hands on IR stuff at war's end. Perhaps they (the museum) drew their inspiration there? Cheers, Adam.
I did qualify my post as an assumption and even cited the source I obtained my information from. this is what I based my assumption on: 8./SS-Pz.Rgt.2 (DR) I did not intend for it to be taken as fact I did however find some additional information about that particular Panther as well as some more pictures http://the.shadock.free.fr/Surviving_Panthers.pdf it is on the 8th page of the PDF.............Read the caption. It appears that the Panther in question never saw service during the 2nd World War as it was built under the Direction of The British Army (REME) after the end of the War. Additional pictures here on Page 4 http://hosted.wargamer.com/Panzer/koblenz/internet/index.html I'll give you a salute anyway, Jug.
Thanks for the help! Was the ambush scheme, also popular on the eastern front? When did it come into play, early 1944? Im not as well versed on the Eastern front as I am the Western. Thanks again Andy
