Are horse-drawn cannons actually worth it? They seem to be a lower caliber than the foot artillery, so are they less powerful?
They move a lot faster when on the attack. For defensive purposes, I think the regular 12lber are better, but if you're on the attack the horse drawn ones don't slow you down.
Well I tend not to attack really. I just build a fort next to an enemy army and wait for them. By the way, I extracted my revenge on the Pueblo nations (Texas). Bit of a Pyrrhic victory though. They had two armies of around 800 men, one of them behind me. I had 1700 men. I lost around 1000 but I wiped out most of their troops.
Running game with dual 8800 GT's with all settings to max. Game is AWESOME. I've always loved the Total War series, but this one to me is in a right race with MTW2 as far as general excitement goes. Only (and still playing) campaign I've been on so far is the Ottoman Empire, using long campaign. Almost over though as I have territories in North America, India and of course all of eastern Europe. Going to try British next and see if I can take over the world.
Overall I am having an excellent time with Empire Total War if not for a few glitches I've run into. The most troublesome issue is that this game will periodically crash to the desktop. Normally an auto save will catch everything prior to the crash but I lost many hours of gameplay yesterday. The best solution to this would be to save the game more often. The time it crashes is when I click the button to end the turn. Perhaps it's my imagination but things seem to slow down the longer into the campaign that you go. I am in the 1770's.
We should all try to do a few multiplayer battles-a few glitches regarding multiplayer but it's fun to battle against humans. Apparently the mulitplayer campaigns are coming out in the next patch!

My campaign appears to have ground to a halt. I played up to the same turn number (144) that I couldn't proceed beyond on Sunday, and wouldn't you know the game crashes to desktop every time I try to move to the next turn. I have read that many people are having similar problems, most of them occuring earlier than mine in the campaign. This problem is in a desperate need of a patch. I've tryed a little troubleshooting but it appears to be an unfixable problem at this point. Tonight I loaded up the turn number prior to 144; I had no trouble in advancing to turn 144. I clicked to the next turn and was very unhappy to see that the game crashed on the identical turn. After all the challenge of advancing through the campaign it is very disappointing to have it all end on the account of a bug.
This game has been released way too prematurely. They even left out a large part of the game (Co-op campaign) that will be coming in the next patch.
The Co-Op Campaign was a late addition and was originally why they pushed the release day back a week....though clearly they did not release it with the main game like they said. CA basically sold out to STEAM is what happened.
so...if us poor ETW-less wait a month or two, we could all get a de-bugged game with better gaming options?
The Bugs in the game - I haven't had any apart from the occasional CTD - really don't effect the gameplay at all. Even buggy, the game got 5 Star out of 5 Stars reviews, 94% etc....only a few games a year (if you're lucky) get such high reviews. Its already been crowned the RTS Game of the Year and its only March! You have to install the patches either way, unless you can wait for a 'Gold' Edition to be released in a few months.
I loved this game until the campaign became unplayable. I am not the only one who has ran into this this terrible bug. I'm done with the Grand Campaign - Total War Center Forums If you aren't in a hurry you might want to wait to see if this gamebreaker gets fixed. I am curious how far Mussolini gets before the CTD's ground his campaign to a halt. Perhaps he will be lucky and get through.
I beat the campaign but it wants me to keep playing (gave me no options) until 1799 when the campaign officially ends.... no choice to stop now or keep playing like MW TW did. BTW, I looked at that link to their forums and I haven't had any CTD's happen (knock on wood).
That is good that some people are able to get through the campaign unscathed. I've had both the occasional CTD as well as the campaign ending CTD. I want to play this game so badly.
Reading through the ETW bug forum yesterday I read that people have not been getting campaign ending crashes if they play the short version campaign. (50 years) I have started another campaign with the 50 year time frame. I do believe you can even continue after 50 years according to one person. I have read that people are not so lucky if they try another long version campaign with a different faction. This will ultimately lead to the campaign ending crash.
Into the 1970's now and waging war against Russia. I think my goal for this Campaign is to move into...INDIA! The Prussians in India? Yes! Russians are down to about 5 Provinces (long march away) and I have Republican Guard Troops (sounds like Star Wars) mixed in with some units. Russia hasn't put up much of a fight...their one army was basically half horse-drawn artillery that never got a chance to set up. Some tiny country occupying Chechnya attacked me too, but i used two lines of Defense (using farm Walls/Fences) in which the rear line covered the flanks. This was a good thing, as their charging cavalry got whittled down by my rear line before it hit my flank. My counter attack routed both their flanks, and three units of Line Infantry inflicted MURDER in the center with volley fire (from higher ground + walls). 1224 vs 249 casualties or so at the end of the day. Then I just waltzed into the undefended city, Nation destroyed! Gives me a border with Persia. I just sailed some Cav, Line, and Prussian Jaegers across the Black Sea to help take out the last of the Russians down there, and as a potential Persian Invasion force. Then I shall have to reshuffle my forces around and perhaps take on Sweden, to become the only Nation East of the Rhine!
