I'm looking for suggestions on books to read about the structure, organization, and manning of the British Army during the Second World War. I have already: Raising Churchill's Army Victory in the West Bouchery's book on the British soldier, volume II Thanks for any ideas. Cheers BW
I'd second Steve's recommendation quite strongly; one of Forty's best efforts, the most solid of the 'Handbooks' series I've yet read (got about a dozen but this one stands out), and a constant reference point. A bit sketchy in places, but still a fine overall survey. Alanbrooke's diaries are pretty useful as a command-eye overview too. ~A
Less technical I think ( it's quite a while since I read it ) but it may also be worth reading 'And We Shall Shock Them - The British Army In The Second World War' by David Fraser.
I'm not sure of the title but isn't the Brian Davis book useful because it shows uniforms/explains numbering systems and so on......
British Army Uniforms & Insignia of World War Two. Unfortunately, there's no index. I've found it useful, on occasions, to look up badges etc. Steve W.
