If Berlin would be bombed we would not surrender, nor the British" Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring "I think what we have done is to wake an asleep giant" Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto Will I survive a defeat? That is in God's hands. The fate of defeated is cruel. But I am happy, because I am aware that I have done all to get the victory and making everything I could" Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel "France has lost a battle! But France has not lost a war!" General Charles DeGaulle "The victory was so expensive that it could have been a defeat" Sir Winston Churchill There are a lot, but those are which I know right now.
Some places I found to start with: http://www.geocities.com/kkh_khan/Quotes.html http://www.angelfire.com/la/raeder/worldwarIIquotes.html http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/a/q128115.html Chamberlain seemed such a nice old gentleman that I thought I would give him my autograph. Adolf Hitler
This thread is very fireshadowing of a feature on the upcoming (and redesigned!) WWII Network. I'll post some more about this over the weekend...
Right, some from, and some about or related to, WWII... "Of all the treasures a state can possess, the human lives of its citizens are for us the most precious." - Iosef Stalin "No matter what happens, the U.S. Navy is not going to be caught napping." - Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, two days before Pearl Harbor "Hitler has shown that hell is still here on earth. He has, in fact, taken the lid off hell, and we have all looked into it. That is his service to the human race." - Field Marshal Smuts, 1944 "Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties - but right through every human heart - and all human hearts." - Alexander Solzhenitsyn "Tonight lads, you go to the 'Big City'. Tonight, you have the opportunity to light a fire in the belly of the beast and burn his black heart out!" - Air Marshal Arthur "Bomber" Harris, RAF Bomber Command "We are in the position of a man who has siezed a wolf by the ears, and dare not let go." - Major General F.W. von Mellenthin, 1943, on Russia and the Eastern Front "There is the great, silent, continuous struggle: the struggle between the State and the Individual; between the State which demands and the individual who attempts to evade such demands. Because the individual, left to himself, unless he be a saint or hero, always refuses to pay taxes, obey laws, or go to war." - Benito Mussolini "Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything." - Iosef Stalin "How many students, to whom World War II is now musty history, recognize at once the name of Georgi Zhukov? ... How many are aware of this man, best described by Harrison E. Salisbury, who 'will stand above all others as the master of the art of mass warfare in the twentieth century'"? - Martin Caidin "You will recall a remarkable discovery we made when we conquered Germany - that there actually were no Nazis there at all, just millions of "decent Germans" suffering terribly because of the awful things they'd been made to do by other people. You will recall also that General MacArthur found the same thing in Japan - that the Japanese were gum-chewing democrats to a man, and only awaiting the arrival of the Americans to prove it...Why the western world should be so avid to swallow this particular brand of eye-wash no man can say. For Nazi Germany was not a nation of honest dupes...Until they were beaten (when all colours change overnight) they were total enthusiasts for world-domination, whole-hearted agents of a hideous tyranny which, if not finally checked, would have brought down the curtain on human freedom for generations to come." - Nicholas Monsarrat
First off, a belated welcome to the forums. Nice quotes. I ecspecially thought the one about Pearl Harbor was kind of funny.
"It gives my men much needed target pratice" Jochim Pieper when being asked about the sherman tank. I'll be back with more quotes soon, but my mind is empty right now.
Thanks for the quotes guys, these are some good ones. Love the the one about US Navy getting "caught napping". The one feature that I'm going to stress with these quotes is that all entries will have to be primary source. Some of you guys are probably quite familiar with this term, for those who aren't, I'm going to have descriptions, definitions and examples when the new site gets going.
I think 'Primary Source Quote Archive' is pretty catchy, Otto - I'll see if I can hum a tune to it.... (PS : I like the Jagdpanther !)
