Ill start you off with one from Maj. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington: "I Hate Jerks".

Heres another but I dont know who said it. Generals Are Sergeants--With Stars".

It will be a primary source quote archive. I have yet to come up with a catchy name for it yet.

Right, some from, and some about or related to, WWII...

"Of all the treasures a state can possess, the human lives of its citizens are for us the most precious."
    - Iosef Stalin

"No matter what happens, the U.S. Navy is not going to be caught napping."
    - Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, two days before Pearl Harbor

"Hitler has shown that hell is still here on earth. He has, in fact, taken the lid off hell, and we have all looked into it. That is his service to the human race."
    - Field Marshal Smuts, 1944

"Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties - but right through every human heart - and all human hearts."
    - Alexander Solzhenitsyn

"Tonight lads, you go to the 'Big City'. Tonight, you have the opportunity to light a fire in the belly of the beast and burn his black heart out!"
    - Air Marshal Arthur "Bomber" Harris, RAF Bomber Command

"We are in the position of a man who has siezed a wolf by the ears, and dare not let go."
    - Major General F.W. von Mellenthin, 1943, on Russia and the Eastern Front

"There is the great, silent, continuous struggle: the struggle between the State and the Individual; between the State which demands and the individual who attempts to evade such demands. Because the individual, left to himself, unless he be a saint or hero, always refuses to pay taxes, obey laws, or go to war."
    - Benito Mussolini

"Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything."
    - Iosef Stalin

"How many students, to whom World War II is now musty history, recognize at once the name of Georgi Zhukov? ... How many are aware of this man, best described by Harrison E. Salisbury, who 'will stand above all others as the master of the art of mass warfare in the twentieth century'"?
    - Martin Caidin

"You will recall a remarkable discovery we made when we conquered Germany - that there actually were no Nazis there at all, just millions of "decent Germans" suffering terribly because of the awful things they'd been made to do by other people. You will recall also that General MacArthur found the same thing in Japan - that the Japanese were gum-chewing democrats to a man, and only awaiting the arrival of the Americans to prove it...Why the western world should be so avid to swallow this particular brand of eye-wash no man can say. For Nazi Germany was not a nation of honest dupes...Until they were beaten (when all colours change overnight) they were total enthusiasts for world-domination, whole-hearted agents of a hideous tyranny which, if not finally checked, would have brought down the curtain on human freedom for generations to come."

Thanks for the quotes guys, these are some good ones. Love the the one about US Navy getting "caught napping". The one feature that I'm going to stress with these quotes is that all entries will have to be primary source. Some of you guys are probably quite familiar with this term, for those who aren't, I'm going to have descriptions, definitions and examples when the new site gets going.

I think 'Primary Source Quote Archive' is pretty catchy, Otto - I'll see if I can hum a tune to it.... ;) :D

    Great quotes Heartland!

The Stalin quote regarding elections was frequently quoted during the Florida election dispute but there were questions regarding the quote's authenticity: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/weekly/aa121800a.htm

    Some great Churchill quotes:

"I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." - Winston Churchill, radio broadcast, Oct. 1, 1939.

"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender." - Winston Churchill, speech, June 4, 1940, House of Commons.

"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'" - Winston Churchill, speech, June 18, 1940, House of Commons.

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." - Winston Churchill, Aug. 20, 1940, House of Commons.

"The latest refinements of science are linked with the cruelties of the Stone Age." - Winston Churchill, speech, March 26, 1942, London.

"I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat." - Winston Churchill, speech, May 13, 1940, House of Commons.

"In defeat unbeatable: in victory unbearable." - Winston Churchill, referring to Viscount Montgomery, victor at El Alamein and later chief of the imperial general staff.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last." - Winston Churchill, quoted in Reader’s Digest, Dec. 1954.

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." - Winston Churchill, speech, Nov. 10, 1942, on the Eighth Army’s victory against Rommel at El Alamein.

"It may almost be said, 'Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.'" - Winston Churchill, in History of the Second World War, vol. 4.

"If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the devil in the House of Commons." - Winston Churchill, in The Grand Alliance, vol. 3.

"Moral of the Work. In war: resolution. In defeat: defiance. In victory: magnanimity. In peace: goodwill." - Winston Churchill, in The Second World War.
