So today I asked my US history teacher what would of happened had Patton been given the Okay to invade Russia and he had no idea such a desire ever existed and thought I had completely fabricated the idea. Does anyone have any facts as to what actually happened. From the little I have read on the issue it seems Patton wanted to and Eisenhower said no.
well if patton had done so the united states would have lost a lot of men but communism would have been eliminated and russia would,nt be making threats to try and invade the artic russians are complete idiots they think they own everything like they sold alaska to the the u.s. and now they want it back because they did,nt know what resources were here till it was to late to take it back now they keep threatening to invade it
Postwar, Patton engaged in some loose talk about starting a war with Soviet forces occupying Germany and Austria. That is a far cry from the idea of the western Allied forces seriously considering a war with the Soviets. There is a novel that explores this idea, "A damned fine war", by Bill Yenne. Cheers BW
By the way you worded your question, your teacher was oblivious to the notion that there was ever any thought of the Western Allies attacking the Russians because there never was any such notion. So he/she was not in error. As previously posted, it was all in Patton's persona.
My own thoughts on old 'Blood n' guts' and his ridiculous thoughts on attacking the SU haven't changed since this old thread. ~A
Of course Europe is not my strong point in the war, but I was under the impression that Patton wanted to beat the Russians to Berlin. He was one of history's largest megalomaniacs and just wanted to improve the image history would remember him by. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
My impression is that he was much more complex than that. He wasn't alone in distrusting the Soviets.
