Well clearly but that doesn't really answer my question...

So do you think Germany was doomed?

I lean towards the same scenario. Stalin wanted Hitler to fight it out with Europe and then step in and be the "hero"....

Yes, Russian 11 time zones are too vast for anyone to capture and keep.

Barbarossa was the only option Hitler had:in WWI Germany was defeated by a combination 4 (or 3 if you count the withdrawal of Russia in 1917),in 1940 the UK was alone, but refused to make peace. Why? Because they expected help from the USSR and the USA ,but both were weak and not ready ,thus the UK had to survive. Hitler knew that he could not win against a combination of the Uk,USA and USSR. But he knew that if they were only two, they could not win, thus he had to eliminate one and quickly. He could not eliminate the USA,he could not eliminate the UK thus the only left was the USSR :without the USSR the UK and the USA had no possibility to defeat Germany . Another point:the Germans were not defeated by the Russian winter:their offensive was stopped before december and their combatlosses during the winter were only 50 % of those of 22 june to 01 september(from june to september weekly 40000,from december to april weekly 20000) .Btw:the assumption that the winter was the harshest in a century is disputable
