What if you were able to appoint any general (in the german army) to help Germany win the war in the east.

Who would be your Commander -in-Chief of the German Army

    Commander of Army Group North

    Commander of Army Group Center

    Commander of Army Group South

Pick the general that you think would of been best fit for a german victory

This would mean that Hitler would allow you and your choices to do as they please

You would pick your commanders based on skill, intellgence and experince to win the war in the east.

Feel free to explain why you picked your selections

And if your really bored, try to come up with a alternative to Operation Barbarossa

Example, would you go away from the tradtional encirlement doctrine, and use your armor to thrust as fas as deep as you can? (as General Heinz Guderian wanted to do)

    :)

The German high command was first class and probably the best in the world, so commanders of the rank of General and Field Marshall were in my opinion pretty much interchangable, at least until about 1944 when Hitler started choosing commanders based on politics.

    Anyway heres my choicees:
    C-in-C: Manstein, Model, or Kesselring
Army Group North: Model (if not c in c) or Guderian
    Center: Guderian
    South: Kesselring or Rundstedt
The most important thing would be i would completely remove Hitler's acting as head of OKW and OKH. He made some good calls in 1940 but after that it was all downhill for the completely amateur former corporal! Hitler had neither the training, the background, the experience nor the temperament to take on all the command functions he did. But his pride and ego would not let him realize this and let him back off and hand over the command structure to the professionals. He would function exactly as Bush did in OIF 1 in 2003, give the commanders their objectives and then get out of their way!

There was a German general that commanded his troops very cautiosly (can't remember his name)but a great german general (he was like monty)
He and Rommel frought like cats and Dogs, and actually caused down fall on the Germans war effort, therefore the Germans were not at full protentral.

With me,I'll have both as generals but keep both them far apart! This will cause both generals 100% attention on the war efforts.
That goes with all the other generals,i would match them up by there personalties!I do believe if generals get along,it could turn the advantage you;re way.

No because like i said, the Germans already had probably the best high command of any army in the world - so they were probably interchangeable.

Simply eliminating Hitler as Commander in Chief, and leaving it to the professionals, would have changed the outcome of the war. How, no one will ever know!

How about AGN General Bedford Forrest. Perfect. Founder of the KKK and very effective put in charge of the least important front in the East.

AGC Chief Joseph of the Nez Prize Indians. Conducted the longest contested retreat in military history.... What more need be said.

And for AGS George Armstrong Custer. He'll kill half the German army and accomplish nothing but, he'll look good doing it!

I agree with the comment that had Hitler not been the Commander in Chief, the war effort overall would have gone better. Who was in overall command anyways was good, it was just Hitler's bad calls. For instance, General Paulus had already completely mauled the city of Stalingrad, it was pratically useless, however Hitler insisted that he capture it, if only to prove he could win a battle anywhere, at anytime, on any battlefield he chose. So the line-up I think was perfect, it was just the Commander.
