Almost seven decades on, the former enemies come face to face again... and embrace like old comrades. It is a touching moment in an extraordinary weekend when a group of Desert Rats are reunited with an old foe. The Desert Rats and the friend who was once a foe reunited after 68 years - mirror.co.uk
Very nice, I greatly like these kinds of stories. Also, if anyone is interested? I just got in a nice photo of a Desert Rats Mortar team in action somewhere in North Africa. You'll have to ask Skipper nicely to see if he would be willing to post that photo for us here ;-))
Amazing what can happen in the midst of war, in my view it helps give both sides a picture of someone just like them, opposite in so many other ways but the same in much more especialy when humour is involved.
Skipper! Is there a chance that you are willing to post Evan's photo up for us? Ps,i have a question for the O/P! which men are the Australians and which men are the Germans? I can't tell the difference without there uniforms! Thank you.
I'm a little late getting to this, but what a great story. To me, the personal stories of men like these are so much more interesting than treatises on weapons, war plans, or tactics. Thanks for finding it and posting it, Ike.
Irusso216-yes it was a great story from IkE. Can you tell me which men are the Austrailans and which men are the germans???Please. I can;t tell!
Here is a really amazing audio account of Rudolf Schneider's life in the Afrika Korps as being Rommel's driver. Also a meeting between a british soldier John riggs and Rudolf Schneider. The two veterans in the war in africa meet for the first time since the war. Gives you a real understanding the kind of respect the enemy had for eachother in africa. BBC - Today enjoy.
