hello,I'm going to do the normandy beachs 5 day battlefield tour in oct, ending last day doing falaise, the corridor of death, any places to make a note of for militaria to buy helmets and the like,ray..
Mmmm... maybe a memeber called J/Patherjager can help you! He has just been to Normandy himself,so may know alot. Maybe PM him later on,if no one can help you. Enjoy you're trip.
hey sniper, i was there in april of this year.....to be honest a lot of the normandy area is very "tourist" when it comes to militaria (prices are much higher then they should be) for example i saw M26 adrain helmet shells (no liner, badge, chin strap) going for 45euro.......i found one else where for 5 ( - so be careful) but from my memory of the beach areas: if you go to Sainte-Mere-Eglise, there is a shop in the square (it's got a window display of german dug up relics, so it catchs your attention)......it's got some very nice stuff - lots of german helmets (good decals etc), ammo pouchs etc - some stuff expensive though. the only other place i can think of, off the top of my head was the little shop/cafe at Utah beach.....they have some stuff too (american and german) in a glass display cabinet - i forget what prices were like here. if i think of any more, i'l post them here. p.s you will find a thread in the militaria (started by me) from this april, there might be some more info there, i forget hope this helps
I have been to Normandy several times and will agree with the comment made previously that the area has become very touristy and it's difficult to find genuine memorabilia. This may not help you but if you have a chance to visit the Ardennes area there were a lot more small shops in the various small towns of Lux and Belg. that had literally tons of US and German relics. They are still finding "remains" in trenches in the woods along with weapons, ammo and other equipment. The Ardennes is less visited than Normandy and extremely interesting. Take along a copy of Charles B MacDonald's "A Time For Trumpets" and you can follow the roads that the Germans took, you can find where various US units blocked the advance. This may not answer your question but if you can make it over to "the Bulge" you won't be disappointed.
I was there last year Sniper ... the place that sticks out for militaria is in Arromanches ... when you enter the main square (where the Museum is) turn left and walk down the street that's lined with cafes & restaurants ... if I remember correctly, it's the first (maybe second) street on the left off that one, you'll see the place straight away, even though it's only a small shop, you can't miss it. As has already been mentioned, prices can be rather steep now that the local populas has realized the huge demand for militaria. I was looking for something specific, that unfortunately I was unable to find ... maybe next time??? Have a good time ... lots of photos for the masses on here ...
Chris, you WILL NOT find a hardly used, one carful owner Panther or Tiger I in any of the militaria shops in Normandy. Sniper1946 sent me a PM regarding info on Normandy and I replied accordingly with some (hopefully) useful tips on places to see and locations of militaria shops.
