I haven't played a WW2 shooter since the original Call of Duty. I remember that the tracers really brought down the game play.

Call of Duty "World at War" does not have tracers. The only one I recall having tracers is "Medal of Honor- Rising Sun"

You really have been missing out.

Forget tracers, you need to head out you door and buy CODUO,COD2,CODWAW ,MOHPA AND MOHA,seriously airborne is under credited.

That's good. I hope the gameplay is much improved with less "running and gunning". The original Call of Duty had them. Whenever you fired an automatic weapon or a semiautomatic rifle, your position was revealed instantly from all directions and everyone would come after you. This was especially bad if you were firing a 30 cal. or the MG34.

Pretty soon, all you could do in half of the maps was to run around with a SMG, shooting wildly.

I haven't played a videogame in years. My last game was the original Call of Duty and its expansion. I also played the multi-player German Front Mod (which was excellent) for Call of Duty for two or three months.

I remember that the German Front mod removed tracers which dramatically improved the gameplay by an enormous degree. Anyone who tried to "run and gun" was cut down in short order and players were forced to advance cautiously and observe muzzle flashes. Engagement distances were much farther. Thanks to this, the bipod MGs were very effective (once, I took down 20 players in a row with a lot of careful MG34 firing from a single position), and often my weapon of choice. The M1, SVT, and the G43 were also much more effective.

To balance this out, there was arms rationing (only a few mgs, smgs, scoped rifles, etc. per map.)

The mod also awarded cover (IE carefully firing from an angle behind an obstacle, etc.) and intelligent positioning. I would look for good positions with good angles of fire/ protection in every map and run there to defend the position 360.

Because of this change, very often there would be a small squad of players with drastically higher scores (myself among them) with circa 3-4:1 kill ratio (and using mainly rifles and MGs) and the majority of the players (who ran around spraying with SMGs and playing carelessly) got very low scores.

RO. The only weapons to have tracers are MG's, and that is in case you can't hit the target with your sights (I.E. Very long range). Especially useful for vehicle mounted MG's.
However, no other guns have tracers.

Is that done to balance the game out? Tracers make the MG very vulnerable to accurate return fire.

MGs in RO are very good at suppressing the enemy. If you can see the MG, chances are its firing at you. Snipers are the best counter for the MG, of course, but a good MG position makes it really hard for other infantry to knock it out with out smoke or flanking support.

The sonic snap of bullets whistling by your head in RO is very unnerving too.

RO also rewards the use of cover. For instance, laying prone with gun resting on/near an obstacle gives you a much more steady aim. Also 'deploying' in a window, your soldier keeps out of sight until you press the Aim-down-Iron-Sights button, at which point he pops up (steadied aim due to window) and can fire at targets. Watching bullets hit the window around you is always fun too.

Standing up and shooting your gun unsupported is a pretty tricky thing to do.

The MG's have colored Tracers too, so you know if its friendly fire or not. It also helps for sightless tanks to aim their guns too (as discussed in the Coaxial MG Thread).

COD and MOH series are much more run-and-gun, fire from the hip type of games. If you try to do that in RO, you'll die everytime (and rarely, extremely rarely, kill an enemy with hip fire).

in Brothers in Arms Hells Highway you can turn tracers off at any difficulty, but on Veteran/realistic you cannot turn them back on
