We are Marco Milanese and Giovanni Cerino-Badone.
In Italy we have a review dedicated to post-medieval archaeology (late
XV - XX Century) titled Archeologia Postmedievale.

We decided to devote the next number to the conflict archaeology. It
will by a monograph dedicated to the archaeological aspect of the war.
The chronological arch we cover ranging from the sixteenth to the
twentieth century.

Since it will be the first time that in Italy it will be presented the
concept of “conflict archaeology” it is essential for us to have
articles about the experiences of excavation outside Italy.

As deadline for the article October 20 might be a reasonable date and
that 80,000 characters including spaces, plus up to 15 images can fit.
The language will be english.

Here's the latest on next year's Fields of Conflict Conference-

"Dear All,
We want to announce the 6th Fields of Conflict Conference in Osnabrück and Kalkriese from Friday, 15th April to Monday, 18th April 2011.
Friday, 15th April: The conference will start at the University of Osnabrück in the early afternoon, with registration, sessions and a keynote lecture.
Saturday, 16th April: Transfer to Kalkriese, sessions, visit of Varus Battlefield and Museum, conference dinner, return to Osnabrück.
Sunday, 17th April: Sessions in Osnabrück.
Monday, 18th April: Excursion to the Harzhorn Battlesite near Northeim (3rd century AD, 100 km south of Hannover), return to Osnabrück (or Hannover airport/central station).
We invite everybody who is interested in ancient or modern conflicts, to present a paper (20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion).
A special subject will be the post-battle processes such as looting, distribution of war booty, graves and massgraves etc.
Deadline for the announcement of papers: 15th November 2010.
Please send proposals with titles and abstracts (approx. 200 words) to Achim Rost (arost@uni-osnabruec k.de).

Surviving the peace; public access, conservation and the military heritage
A seminar organised by ALGAO:UK at the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology, University of Glasgow will be held at Culloden, Inverness on Thursday 30th Sept-Frid 1st Oct. 2010.
The seminar will explore on-site interpretation, public access, and education facilities, as well as the use of sites for community involvement and as a focus of commemoration.

"Fortifications at Risk Symposium

July 2010.

The Fortress Study Group (FSG) is holding a symposium on 8/9 March 2011, at the National Army Museum London entitled “Fortifications at Risk” to highlight concern at the number of 19th and 20th century fortifications – particularly WW1 and WW2 defences – that have become derelict or have been destroyed. Building upon the “Defence of Britain” project, the FSG is bringing together interested parties to discuss the preservation of these structures, and imaginative ways in which they might be reused. Speakers include prominent British and international figures in the heritage world. Full details will be published shortly.

The Brandenburg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeological Museum (BLDAM) organises a conference from the 21st to the 24th of November 2011. The conference will be held in the Brandenburg State Archaeological Museum town of Brandenburg upon Havel with the title
„Battlefield and mass grave –a range of interdisciplinary analyses of places of violence”
Since several years there is also in Germany a growing interest in the comparatively young branch of research of battlefield archaeology. The reason for this development can be found in the archaeological and historical research of battlefields like the bronze-age place in the Tollense valley or Kalkriese, the Harzhorn and Luetzen.
In particular, the recovery of single bones, bone pits, single and mass graves linked to places of violence within the last years has brought a wide range of information to the surface. Next to archaeology and anthropology there are a lot more of natural scientific research fields that provide detailed information on the dead. Moreover, they also provide the opportunity to shed light on the fate of the individuals involved in battles or other acts of violence.
The initial point for this conference is the recovering of a mass grave with about 120 soldiers in the middle of the thirty years war’s battlefield of Witt stock 1636 in spring 2007. The huge number of buried soldiers, the accurately archaeological and anthropological recording and the entire recovery of all skeletons and single bones are the backbone of its exceptional role in mass grave archaeology. A working group of archaeologists, anthropologists, paleopathologists, archeometrists, historians, geoscientists, experts in ballistic and weaponry was involved in the analysis of these extraordinary findings. This interdisciplinary research provided on top of the reconstruction of the order of events on the battlefield a look on those battle days from the view point of an “ordinary soldier” that has been neglected in the records very often so far.
This special exhibition “1636 – their last battle” can be visited from September 2011 to April 2012 in the Brandenburg State Archaeological Museum in the former Monastery of St. Paul in the town of Brandenburg Havel.

We invite scientists from all research areas who study places of violence to present a paper (30 minutes + discussion). The results can be presented as a poster as well. The subject of the conference is not exclusively restricted to the early modern period but may encompass other periods and events too. Contributions with an interdisciplinary paradigm are mostly welcome.
The conference languages are English and German.
Additionally, we are planning to offer an excursion to the Wittstock battlefield and the Museum of the Thirty Years War on the 24/11/2011.

The Centre for Battlefield Archaeology is pleased to announce the re-launch of the Journal of Conflict Archaeology by Maney Publishing from 2011. Formerly published by Brill, with the final volume (5) now available, the journal will appear three times each year and is to be available in online and printed versions. Founded and edited by Tony Pollard and Iain Banks ( University of Glasgow , UK ), the Journal of Conflict Archaeology is devoted to battlefield and military archaeology and other spheres of conflict archaeology, covering all periods with a worldwide scope. Additional fields of interest include the archaeology of industrial and popular protest, contested landscapes and monuments, nationalism and colonialism, class conflict, the origins of conflict, forensic applications in war-zones etc. Submissions and proposals for papers are now being accepted and in the first instance can be submitted as abstracts or enquiries to the editors

The Journal represents an exciting new discipline within Maney’s list of 17 journals in archaeology and heritage, and provides an important outlet for the best research in this fast-growing subject.

"The 6th annual Midwest Historical Archaeology Conference will take place Saturday October 9th on the campus of Heidelberg University, Tiffin, Ohio.

The conference will feature 4 invited speakers who will give presentations on their research into the archaeology of conflict. Topics include an Indian trading post, the American Revolution, and the American Civil War. A fifth guest speaker will give an evening lecture on the excavation of mass graves from the Spanish Civil War.

Submissions are being accepted for poster presentations on any aspect of historical archaeology. Student submissions will be entered into a student poster prize to be voted on by attendees. Winners will receive a cash award.

A series of small roundtable discussions will provide opportunities for individuals with similar research interests and career goals to interact. These discussions will be led by experts in each area.

All attendees must register for the conference. The cost is $20 per person. Undergraduate students can register for $15 if they include a copy of their student ID with their registration materials. This cost includes a catered lunch and morning coffee/tea. The deadline to register is Monday, September 20th. The deadline to submit poster titles and abstracts is Friday, September 17th.

John Haldon, Princeton (jhaldon@princeton.edu)
John Haldon is professor of Byzantine History and Hellenic Studies. His research centers on the socioeconomic, institutional, political and cultural history of the early and middle Byzantine empire from the seventh to the eleventh centuries. He also works on political systems and structures across the European and Islamic worlds from late ancient to early modern times and has explored how resources were produced, distributed and consumed, especially in warfare, during the late ancient and medieval periods. Professor Haldon is the author and co-author of more than two dozen books. His most recent books are The social history of Byzantium (Blackwell, Oxford 2008) and Byzantium in the iconoclast period: a history, with L. Brubaker (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2010). Professor Haldon is the director of the Euchaita/Avkat Project - an archaeological and historical survey in north central Turkey. As well as traditional methods of field survey and historical research, this long-term project employs cutting edge survey, mapping and digital modelling techniques to enrich our understanding of the society, economy, land use, demography, paleo-environmental history and resources of the late Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk/Ottoman periods. He is also co-director of the international Medieval Logistics Project - an international project deploying Geographical Information Systems and sophisticated modelling software to analyze the logistics of East Roman, early medieval Western European and Early Islamic warfare and structures of resource allocation. Phil Sabin, King’s College London (philip.sabin@kcl.ac.uk)Phil Sabin studied History and Natural Sciences at Queens’ College Cambridge, and did his PhD in the War Studies Department. He held research fellowships at Harvard University and the International Institute for
Strategic Studies. He played a leading role in establishing King’s academic partnerships with the Joint Services Command and Staff College and the Royal College of Defence Studies, as well as chairing the University of London’s Military Education Committee. He is a long-standing member of the Chief of the Air Staff’s Air Power Workshop, appears regularly on radio and television, and has lectured throughout Europe and the USA as well as further afield in countries ranging from Japan and Korea to Chile. His past research interests have included British defence planning and public opinion about defence, but his main focus now is on the analytical modelling of warfare as a dynamic strategic and tactical contest. He has used this analytical approach to study two areas in particular - the air power contests of the 20th century, and the great land battles of the ancient world. His highly innovative use of simulation and gaming techniques for the modelling of past conflicts extends also to his teaching, especially in his MA option which is detailed further on the Conflict Simulation page.

Call for Papers

The opening decade of the 21st century has seen war assume a number of new forms - new at least in relation to the 20th century. So, for instance, the West?s war in Afghanistan is already longer than WW2, and shows no sign of coming to an and; the nature of those engaged in war has widened to include a variety of non-state agents; and war itself has come to include as arguably justifiable tactics and
strategies previously either excluded or at least not recognised as legitimate. In short, the distinction between war and peace is becoming increasingly unclear.

The 2011 conference is part of a continuing and explicitly multi- and inter-disciplinary conversation that aims to bring together people from a wide range of disciplines to focus on this centrally significant aspect of our social lives in order better to understand the nature and place of war and peace.

The main themes are outlined below: however, we are also pleased to receive proposals that extend or complement these. We seek contributions from both practitioners and academics, and from the widest possible range of intellectual interests and commitment.

1. What Counts as War; What Counts as Peace?
~ The militarization of civil life: legislation; economics; surveillance; "terrorism"; torture.
~ "States of exception" and their role between peace and war.
~ Possible forms of warfare: economic blockade; propaganda; drones; virtual
weapons and wars; alternatives to physical force.

2. Actors and Agents
~ The nature and evaluation of non-state combatants: private companies; ad-hoc
supranational organisations; the UN.
~ War and capitalism: state, corporation and globalization; war as an arm of
domestic policy; ?low-level? wars since WW2 as forms of testing and
preparation.
~ Responsibility for and in war: social and individual agency.

3. Explaining, Understanding and Judging War - and Peace
~ Killing: why is it prima facie wrong?
~ War and utopianism: ideals as motivation for/cause of war.
~ The interplay between language and physical reality in warfare and its
promulgation.
~ The representation and communication of suffering.
~ War as aesthetic object.

The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. Papers will also be considered on any related theme.
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 10th December 2010. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 1st April 2011. Abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation, c) email address, d) title of abstract,

The conference is part of the Probing the Boundaries programme of research projects. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and exciting.

A number of volumes of eBooks and themed hard copy volumes are in preparation and/or in print from the previous meetings of this project. All papers accepted for and presented at the conference will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers may be developed for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s).

The London Blitz 1940
Laurence Burridge will be telling the story of the December 1940 Blitz on London. Meet at 18.00 hours at the firemen’s memorial on the Thames side of St Pauls. The evening will end in a local pub.
The UK Battlefields Trust - Events

Interpreting battlefield finds; making the most of museums. One day conference in association with the Royal Armouries, Leeds.
Saturday, 4th December 2010.

This interactive study day will examine the process of interpreting pieces recovered from battlefield sites and especially how to tap in to the wealth of expert knowledge in the field of the study of arms and armour.
It will highlight the range of assistance that museum curators and arms and armour specialists can offer archaeologists, military historians and indeed anyone who has an interest in interpreting material discovered through battlefield excavations. Archaeologists and historians eminent in the field of the study of battlefields and related sites will discuss aspects of the role which can be played by museum collections and staff in helping interpret objects recovered from them. They will tackle a wide variety of fascinating topics covering the period from the Norman Conquest to World War One and sites including the battles of Fulford (1066) and Towton (1461), an Elizabethan wreck off Alderney and The Somme.
The conference will also offer a unique opportunity to examine and discuss battlefield related pieces from the Royal Armouries collections.
