During the Cold War, ideological confrontations and inter-state conflicts were seen as most dangerous threats against peace and security, and with the end of the Cold War, it was expected that all these threats would disappear. Unfortunately, however, the end of the Cold War witnessed the emergence of new conflict patterns and the world faced new global challenges, new security threats. Since the end of the Cold War, the world has been going through a series of interrelated intra-state conflicts rather than inter-state conflicts. New generation threats for peace and security and conflicts appeared immediately as intra-state conflicts with ethnic conflict in the Balkans, political turmoil in Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East and recently with the emergence of protests and search for better democracy and peace as in Northern Africa countries.
According to the 1994 UNDP human development report, the seven dimensions of human security are economic security, food security, health security, environmental security, personal security, community security and political security. However, with the emergence of new security threats and new generation conflict patterns across the globe, human rights, human security, humanitarian intervention, democracy, prosperity and peace building initiative have become new values and policies both for states and international organizations. All these are post-Cold War concepts that are inter- related and overlapping, and when they are undermined, sustainable peace cannot be established.
As we observed from the beginning of history that conflict potential and conflicts are inevitable and will be available forever, only the conflict patterns can change. If so, we need to learn to which extent intra-state conflicts can be managed properly and to which extent conflict escalation across national frontiers, and also their escalation into violence, can be prevented. However, there are mistakes as well as success stories as regards to how states and International/regional organizations manage and / or prevent inter-state and intra-state issues / conflicts.
It is in the context of further contributing to the scholarly debates involving post Cold War political ideology, geopolitics, international and regional cooperation in efforts to resolve or prevent the growing intra-state and cross-border conflicts that IPRA has decided to be the focus of the 25th IPRA General Conference to be organized on the Occasion of the 50th Anniversary of IPRA and hosted by the Sakarya University in Istanbul, TURKEY, between August 10-14 2014. On the 50 th Anniversary of IPRA, the venue of 25th IPRA General Conference is significant and timely since Turkey is in the middle of three continents and also currently surrounded by conflict zones in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel-Palestine etc . Also, Istanbul is a link between Europe and Asia.
We welcome paper, poster and panel proposals from all peace researchers related to the following IPRA Commissions. Interested participants have the option of suggesting new panels or sessions.

[SIZE=11pt]The study of the archaeology of the First and Second World Wars has rapidly expanded over the last decade, not the least because of the approaching centennial of the First World War in 2014-18. [/SIZE][SIZE=11pt]These conflict landscapes and their surviving archaeological remains are mainly studied from two different approaches: either using contemporary historical aerial photographs or with modern day prospection techniques (oblique aerial photographs, Lidar, geophysical prospection techniques, etc…).[/SIZE]

Archaeologies of War(s) (1914-2014) as the field of the entanglement of landscape archaeology, conflict archaeology, memory studies and…
The session foregrounds the materiality of memory of XX century wars, by investigating the relations between past and present, absence and presence, carriers
and lapses of memory. During the last decade, within the archaeological discourse, appeared diagnosis: that ‘no other kind of archaeology is so deeply and
poignantly anthropological as the Great War archaeology and the archaeology of twentieth century conflicts’ (Saunders 2004), and that the archaeology of
superdestruction of life and matter initiated by World War One, can be seen as the ‘archaeological therapy’ (Gonzales Ruibal 2008). In our session we would like to
discuss:
* to what extent such opinions can be confirmed by the specific studies of material remains of the XX century wars;
* how the complex and sophisticated interdisciplinary methods, such as (non)invasive ‘landscape archaeology’ can impact on materially mediated memory of peace
and wars;
* in what sense the elaborated strategy of ‘conflict archaeology’ is / can be useful in ‘archaeological therapy’ understood as ‘dealing with a traumatic past, bringing
forward presence and managing conflicting memories’; and finally
* if the involvement in and motivations for archaeological interactions with material remains and other issues connected to the World War One and to the
subsequent XX c. wars are unarguable from ethical point of view?

Understanding a battle can sometimes prove difficult and can raise interesting questions…

Why did the general chose to send his units to that side of the battlefield?

Why did that unit not see the danger from the right flank?

Which version of “the truth” should I believe?

What was it “really” like to be there?

Would I have done any better?


A number of military historians have suggested that to really understand a battle you not only need to read a number of accounts (to have a “rounded” view), but you also need to visit the battlefield to see the lie of the land for yourself and also wargame the battle.

These latter two options also can prove difficult…

How much has the land changed since the battle took place?

Is the battle site actually accessible?

Which set of wargame rules do I follow?

How do I deal with the “fog of war”?

In this month’s talk, Colin Foster will try to address some of these questions by revisiting the events of 30th July 1944 as 3rd Battalion Scots Guards (part of 6th Guards Tank Brigade) took part in the opening phases of Operation BLUECOAT in their first engagement in the Normandy fighting. In addition to the talk, part of the evening will be spent examining the conclusion of the Scots Guards’ part in the first phase of the Operation when on Hill 226, their initial objective, they were subjected to an attack by three German JagdPanthers of Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 654

Aimed at students conducting research into aviation and air power history at undergraduate through to doctoral level, this free afternoon workshop seeks to introduce a new generation of academics to the archive collections at the Royal Air Force Museum. This includes students working in cognate fields such as archaeology, defence studies, sociology, strategic studies, international relations and law. The Archives Division at the Royal Air Force Museum consists of four sections; Archives, Library, Photographs and Sound and Film. In addition to talks by key members of staff, you will get a chance to ask questions and find out more about the work undertaken by the division. Additionally, you will get a chance to have a tour of the archive and network with other students in your field. The event starts at 13:00 and will finish at approximately 16:00. The event will be held in the museum’s Halton Room. Simply fill in the attached registration form to attend this free workshop. Please return the form by Friday 28 March 2014.

The Business of War Photography: Producing and Consuming Images of Conflict Durham University and Durham Light Infantry Museum and Art Gallery, UK

The intersection of photography and war encompasses a broad and complex field. Yet conceptually, ?war photography? is often restricted to the activities of photojournalists producing aesthetically compelling images used to humanitarian ends. Scholars have primarily focused on issues of veracity, iconicity, memory, affect and ethics.
Insightful though this work is, we lack crucial information and critical reflection on fundamental questions regarding how commercial, tactical and personal factors have shaped the diverse terrain of images arising from all contexts of armed conflict.

The aim of this conference is to examine war photography in this expanded sense?that is, as the result of a nexus of pragmatic and strategic transactions and interactions concerning business, militarism and consumption.

We seek papers that address the ways in which issues of supply and demand have shaped the field of war photography, and how this field has articulated with other forms of industrialised and commercial activity. We invite scholars in a range of disciplines to reflect upon the relevance to war photography of commerce, industry, the military and marketing, as well as the role of workers, publishers, politicians, strategists, purchasers and consumers. Together, we endeavour to develop alternative methodological frameworks for approaching images of armed conflict, and to shift and expand thinking on the concept of war photography.

A range of historical periods, geographical regions and modes of conflict is encouraged. Participants are invited to propose 20-minute papers on topics related to the theme The Business of War Photography, including but not limited to the following:
* The photographic companies, entrepreneurs and workers serving markets created as a result of war
* The requirements of military agencies and their involvement in photographic innovation through funding the development of military imaging technology
* The role of the state in commissioning, shaping and circulating photographic images, and their relationship with foreign and domestic policy and military strategy
* The marketing of photographic products and services to servicemen/women and civilians during wartime
* The production and consumption of photographic merchandise (e.g.
souvenirs, postcards)
* The publication and dissemination of war images in the media, and the role of consumers, editors and advertisers in shaping content
* The market for art photography deploying military imaging techniques or which critiques the role of photography in modern armed conflictŠŠSubmission details

We invite proposals of 300 words with a brief biographical note or 1-page CV by 1 March 2014. Applicants will be notified by Friday 14 March. Drafts of papers are due for circulation with co-panellists and chairs by Friday 27 June 2014.

It is envisaged that a selection of papers from the conference will be developed for publication as a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal. The conference organisers are currently discussing this possibility with the Editorial Board of the Journal of War & Culture Studies. Although this will not preclude selection to present at the conference, please state if your proposal has been previously published in any form.

Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, The Aga Khan University (International) in the United Kingdom
Saturday 15th – Sunday 16th March 2014

This short course, Archaeology of Warfare in Muslim Cultures, will focus on military architecture and arms and armour. Expert speakers will explore the fortifications; siege techniques; and the art of war, strategies and tactics; they will review the weapons and armour used by rulers, soldiers and warriors by geographical area and period.

Annual Conference 2014
Metallurgy in Warfare – A Spur to Innovation and Development

3rd to 5th October 2014
City Hall, Malthouse Lane, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP2 7TU

The 2014 annual conference is timed to coincide with commemorations of the outbreak of the First World War – “The Great War” of its generation. Salisbury has been chosen as the venue because of its convenient location for many military museums, two of them associated with weapons inconceivable without metals, the Bovington Tank Museum, and the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop. Sunday 5th Oct will be available for Museum Visits. Salisbury City Hall is itself a Memorial Hall for the Second World War.

The scope of the conference is not limited to any particular historical or pre-historical period. Although any relevant contribution will be considered, the organisers are particularly hoping for papers on the following themes:

• Developments in metallurgy arising from particular military needs
• Developments in weapons or military organisation arising from metallurgical innovation
• Developments in the organisation and management of metal/metal artefact production required as a result of urgent military demands

The conference language will be English. There will be facilities available for posters and time will be allocated for a poster session. The maximum size for posters is A0 (841 x 1189mm – upright/portrait format).

Abstracts for papers and posters should be submitted by 7th March 2014. Abstracts should be sent by e-mail to HMSannualconf@hist-met.org in Word format and should be no longer than 250 words. Please include the name and affiliation of all authors and indicate the presenting author in bold letters.

The D Day beaches and Normandy battlefields are some of the best known and most visited battlefield destinations. The dramatic landings from the air and the sea against Nazi occupied Europe is one of the epic events of the Second World War.

This lecture is going to look at some stories to emerge from new research into D Day and the battle of Normandy. These reveal some new secrets behind the success of D Day; why the Allies did not take Caen; how decisions made in St James Square shaped post war Europe and the part the Black Horse public house in Marylebone High Street played in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

This is my first talk based on the research into the Normandy campaign carried out over the last two years drawing on the unpublished papers of the men who planned the fire support for the D Day landings.and the papers of the late Major Will Townend. http://www.justgiving.com/Normandygunners1944
