If you could fly a fighter plane in the Pacific, which one would you fly?

Personally, I would fly the F4F Wildcat because this plane had to deal with the Japanese from the start. THis plane had to hold the ground until the new designs came out, like the F6F and F4U Corsair. Also, the Wildcat served on the escort carriers later in the war, still ranking up kills

Hope to get some good arguments

Does this include both Japanese and Allied planes?

Well if I had to choose an Allied plane it would be the F6F

For the Japanese side it would be the Ki-84 Frank

I am going to have to go with the "Whistling Death" of the F-4U Corsair.

P-40 for me, painted up with the tiger shark markings of the Flying Tigers. The CBI was sort of near the Pacific....

Since I would be flying IN the war, and would like to survive the war, I'll take a P-51D or P-47N.

I'd fly a P-38J since it's reliable and fast. The F4U was a pain to fly and incredibly advanced so I wouldn't want to fly that, and carrier landings would be terrifying. For Japan I would fly either an N1K1 or a J2M. Ki-84's always had reliability problems from the shortage of supplies.

Without a doubt, the P-51 Mustang. The sleekest deadliest looking plane that I've ever seen.

Over the Pacific ocean and over the jungles, a single engine plane is fun, untill the engine starts sputtering.

No Mr. Funnyman, Ben Affleck flew out of Hawaii. The Benbo was not in the Flying Tigers. John Wayne would'nt let him in anyway.

Sorry man I took some artistic latitude, I guess I spent too much time debating the short commings of a Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor; but you did get my point.

I always loved the Corsair, I think because I had a scale model of one as a kid.

A P-39 in one of the backwater areas like the Canal Zone or, Johnson Island or maybe, Espirito Santo. A nice flying plane with good ground handling. Okay, it wasn't so hot in the top notch fighter department but it could hold its own to about 15,000 feet. Since most aerial combat in the Pacific took place at under 25,000 feet and the bulk under 20,000 feet this isn't too big a problem either.
