    Carl,

Patti is one of my favorite people of all time. Spoke with her for about 5 years, before we met 2 years ago in San Antonio for lunch at the Riverwalk. It was like we wwere old friends. She had her fathers collection and I brought my uncle's collection. Mr. Willey was a one of a kind.

I'm sure Patti would love to see Ya', if you want I can email her to give her a heads up.

I promise on my next trip to Houston we'll visit Fajita Willey's.... Can't wait !

    My Best Regards

    Steve

That sounds like Enemy at the Gates, with the fictional Major Koenig of the German's sniper school searching for and loosing in the "one on one" with the actual Vassili Zaitsev/Zietsev (sp?)

I thought the character of Koenig was based off of a real German sniper called Hienz Thorvald, although his existence has been debated as well. I know that Zaitsev did NOT have the most kills though, he was just the most famous.

Those numbers just dont seem to be possible with the cold weather factor and poor equiptment I highly doubt any Russian had more than 250 kills it just does not make any sense the spotters usually conferm the Kill ratio and the Americans best in vietnam had below 300 in warm weather conditions with high power and nitrogen filled scopes to stop fogging . I just think they were trying to top the americans Numbers. Sorry no disrespect intended the communist manifesto would back my comments Plausability.

The world is a pretty big place and Americans aren't the best at everything. Maybe your having a hard time believing that someone in some way, shape or form might be better than an American at something?

    BTW,
Simo Hayha was credited with over 500 kills in 100 days and he was from Finland not Russia and the highest number of kills by a US sniper is around 100 not 300.;)

Hi Ray, VERY impressive list, and I have met Bob Jones before. He lives in Corpus Christi, Texas. The man has sucha distinctive voice too-which was how I recognized him never having seen a photo of him. He sometimes is a "sit-in" for Eric von Wade on his talk show. I was with my then roommate Sarge Bill, and we were on the way to my car when I heard a fimilar voice say something to a Bus Driver I knew who was going into Wally-World (aka) Wal-Mart, and Bill and I were on our way out. I walked up to Mr. Jones and had asked if he was the man who I heard about who had been a Sniper in the military in nam, and yep, he was the one and the same ;-)) Very nice Gent to chat with.

Hi Ray, i've heard him mention about his service on the radio, but I don't recall ever hearing him talk about what his actual "job" was? The reason I know about Bob Jones as a Vet-is because of a good friend of mine Gary Hatley-had known him during the Vietnam War. Gary was in one of the 101st Airborne Divs P.I.R's and had been in the midst of fighting in the Ia Drang Valley and also connected to Operation Ripcord. Im not sure when Gary met Bob? but next time I see him? which will probably not be for at leasta year--ill try to remember to ask him and se what all he remembers about Bob Jones ;-))

BTW, Gary owns a Gunshop hat he runs which is next to his house, and he builds one of a kind weapons for people-one of which was a hunting rifle for Bob Jones. This was about 20 years ago though.

I think its very possible Mikhail Surkov got 702 kills,Simo Hayha got 705?(think thats the number)in about 3 months in very harsh conditions,i dont see why Surkov couldn't get 702 in about 4 years.

Cameraman Archady Letvian (left) and Sniper Mikhail Surkov (right) 1942 from Russian National Archives
    [IMG]

Surkov passed away in 1953 in Siberia,In an interview Surkovs son said he himself became a top rate shooter in the Soviet Army post war and commented this talent was inherited from his father.

Hi Steve, I guess my original post didnt take? but, do so. They also serve their hot sauce hot-which does change things. However, don't drink their Iced Tea-that stuff as the British might say is: Orrible, absolutely orrible ;-))

Hi Vintovka, no offense meant but, you know how the Russians like to greatly embellish things sometimes ;-)) There have been too many cases proven as fact in which they did so, that are in print that tell about some of that embellishment. One case I can think off off hand-is when they claimed to have shot up more Tiger tanks than were actually a part of Otto Carius's Tiger Company during some "engagement" with Carius's Company-that never took place to begin with. Same can be said about their shooting down of German Aircraft. One case in point that the Russians claimed to have achieved, was in the shooting down of Stuka Pilot Hans-Ulrich Rudel-on many occasions in which he was supposed to have been killed each time. Rudel was shot down, but I don't know how many times? and of course was never killed. Also, as was to the chagrin of the Russians, Rudel survived each time. Another great case in point was when they also claimed to have killed Erich Hartmann too.

no offence taken,Some of the kills could be propaganda I believe as well.
Vassili Zaitsev in his memoirs made an interesting statement,he said when a reporter was with him on a hunt he would take say 5 shots and only killed 2 Germans but the reporter's would mark all 5 down as kills thus the exploited kills in the papers were larger than the actual number.

Hi Vintovka, Zaitsev is one who I always admired for his skill. I wish Enemy At the Gates would have done Zaitsev justice-by actually telling his story instead of turing it into Romantic Fiction. That's hollywood for you though :-(
