Although a little of topic Hollywood is worse than the Russians for making war history accurate!

All I can tell you for sure was that certain battles were really a bad place for a German officer to wear his rank and walk around in the open.

I remember reading that Zaitsev had a wife at Stalingrad, who was also a sniper. She was presumed to be killed on a mission behind enemy lines. She survived and they met years after the war, although Zaitsev already remarried.

So because Russian snipers are credited with high amounts of kills, it means that they lied because it was more then an American's?

Thank you for a bit of humor today.;)

I'm sorry to say so but I don't think the Soviets bothered about the Americans in 1942. After all from the Soviet perspective the US wasn't in the bloody war.

As for cold weather and poor equipment beeing a hindrance...

But then again I am not American so what the hell would a socialist Norwegian serving as a grunt since 1996 know???

Hell, people accomplished a lot of amazing feats in the war that only a small handful can in this day and age!

After reading that, I'm at a loss for words...

The wiki also has a list,

Quite well said. A rare exception to the rule (about Hollywood that is) is great movies like: Decision Before Dawn, The Steel Helmet, Pork Chop Hill, Target Zero, Time Limit (sorry for interjecting four great movies about the Korean War in between two great WWII movies) and The Longest Day. I flat out refuse to add Saving Private Ryan to this kind of a line-up since its almost pure fiction based around D-Day.

Oh and, for your post, I gladly dub thee with 30 more rep points. Would do a :salute: too but, I don't have any to give yet. ;-))

Simo Häyhä is the number one regarding proven kills. According to Petri Sarajanen's book "White Death":

Corporal Simo Häyhä was legendary Finnish war hero who was better known as the white death or belaja smert. During the fights as a sniper Häyhä recorded 505 enemy kills which is still today unreachable. Some sources claim that the kill ratio was 545, but this cannot be verified. Häyhä killed also over 200 russians with his submachine gun. Häyhä was one of those soldiers that created that famous winter war spirit to the Finnish troops.

Among the soviet troops Häyhä was feared and hated. There are stories how the red army sent their own snipers to take care of Häyhä, but they never returned. During the winter war Häyhä developed some famous sniper tactics which are in use even today. He for example freezed the front of his position, so the enemy couldn't see the snow puff when he fired his rifle.

Häyhä was badly wounded in 6th of March at 2pm when a exploding bullet hit his jaw to the left side. He was taken to the hospital and for some reason in 7th April the news on the home front told that he is dead. Häyhä saw these news himself from the newspaper and responded that stop the funeral, you're missing a dead body.

Simo Häyhä died at the age of 96 in 1st of April in Hamina.

    hello

I just joined the site after reading this thread, i was looking for info on a russian soldier in WWII who used a PTRS-41 with a mosin-nagant scope. I read somewhere a while ago that he had over 200 confirmed kills, has anyone ever heard of this?

Im doing this for a news report for school about someone who has done something that inspire's you.

I believe Zaitsev used one, however I am not familiar with the number of kills he was credited with the PTRS-41.

    Cheers Ed, Triple/

Triple, you might want to go to Rays post listing quite a few snipers on it. The persons name you seek is probably there.

    Best regards-C.

ya but i dont know what his name is, im pretty shure hes the only one who used the PTRS-41 with a scope. I just thaught it was amazing it wouldnt even be funny to be shot by that. lol But what i read was that it was one battle, the russians were holding a hotel of some sort and they held it for like 2 months. They said that the germans lost more people in that battle then they did taking over france. I dont know how true this is, but i cant seem to be able to find it anywere.

I believe what your are referring to is "Pavlov's House" in the battle of Stalingrad (it was an apartment building). This house was garrisoned by several dozen Russian soldiers who did in fact managed to inflict more casualties on the Germans than the amount lost during the liberation of Paris.
