Now what would have happened during the slaughter on the US Coast if the U-Boats had of shelled teh Galveston refineries in early 1942-keeping in mind that these refineries were producing 50% of teh US oil products!!!!

I really cant see that it would hure our war effort as we also had many millions of barrels of iol in reserve. Gas might be even slightly more rationed--but I cant see that it would really have hurt our production of oil very much or very long. Also, the uboat(s) that might try to do such an attack would have to face not only out Coastal Artillery, but Navy and Army Fighters and Bombaers, some Navy vessels, and the Coast Guard. It would be practical suicide for the uboat(s) to try such an attack that near the shores. The water isnt very deep either-so they would have to do it via--longer ranged shelling--less accurate.

I can't even begin to fathom how many U-boats you would need to completly knock out those refineries.

Look at the allied bombing of ploesti...they did considerable damage to the place even though the planes suffered horrible losses...but they did lots of damage...BUT not damage that really affected germany's ability to wage war.

Those u-boats didn't exactly have 14in guns...they were at MOST 5in prob less i think...if you manages to assemble 20 u-boats...which i think would be alot...the damage done would be minimal to the US's ability to wage war.

Many uboats were armed also with the 88s, but there would not have been enough room for a woldpack to operate near there--the Gulf isnt very deep--at least near where I live. Go to Baffin Bay--and all you can put there are either rowboats, rafts-or surfboards.

The "Urban Legend" was: that at somepoint in ww2--a Uboat was in Baffin Bay. Supposedly some German sailors came up to the beach on some small inflatable boats. I think as the legend goes: I think they were sent to spy, and while some were supposedly spying--others were actually fishing.

A German uboat could not ever have made it into Baffin Bay--the water for miles, is less than 4 feet deep.

Oh you know i think i heard of that...a german sub landing spys in the gulf...onto one of the gulf states.
I think i heard it on the history channel...maybe they mentioned that that was another proposed spot to land operatives...but after the landing on the east coast failed maybe the germans scrapped the plan?
Hey...where did they land in the east?

Oh its definately true that German spies were landed by Uboats. A group of 4 were landed I think on the shores of either New Jersey or New York--they were caught, and I think they were executed.

The other place they landed a "party of four" was somewhere on the FloriDUH beaches. These men were snatched up too.

Now for them to have supposedly landed a "party" in Baffin bay--is just bunkem and bosch.
