I wonder how well they performed and how far they could get from the controlling aircraft?

What I was chuckling about was the fact that Hellcats were "jets".

However, to get you started on the question:

    Hey guys !
Just tid bit, There was an aircraft that had both a radial engine and a general electric I-16 turbojet engine. The Ryan Model 28 FR-1 Fireball. Navy pilots used to love to pull up to an unsuspecting aircraft, shut down the radial engine and pull away at a very fast pace.

    Regards,
