I found a 'photo of an United States Army officer on the 'net. The title stated he was carrying Christmas parcels in Germany in 1944. I found the fork in the road on Google Earth and stopped and took a 'photo of the same scene in 2007.

It would be great to track down the Officer or his family. Any suggestions as to how to go about this?

Google Map link:- 50°43'04.98"N 006°15'32.23"E - Google Maps

    of:-

    50°43'04.98"N 006°15'32.23"E

    Thanks.

Nicely done! Good luck on your search. Any names of people or units linked to that photo? If not, will be a difficult task.

The number at the lower right of the 'photo (196365-S) would indicate it is an official photograph. I'm not familiar with who operates the WW2 US Army archives.

If you had posted this Wednesday or Thursday, I might have had an answer
    for you today.

196365-S is the ID number utilized by the NARA, College Park, MD.
I was there until 1630 this evening, completing a two day visit.

Over two days, I spent over ten hours in Still Pictures on the Fifth Floor viewing
and scanning many Signal Corps photos.

The staff there is excellent and if you send them an email
    at

    stillpix@nara.gov

I suspect they will copy the caption on the reverse of the photo
    and send it to you.

I sent an email to the director of the Signal Corps Archives. Hopefully I will get a response with a point of contact as well.

Well, for starters he is in 9th Army judging from the location. I would start by seeing what units were in the vicinity at the time and go from there.

There is a director of Signal Corps Archives?

I surmise you mean Richard Baker of the AHEC.

By accident and with no particular purpose in mind I went through this (now defunct) link:- Widelec - and came across a 'photo taken somewhere in Germany during WW2.

The link and its 'photos was 'acquired from' Holiday Photos: World War II but was without any explanations of each 'photo.

As I was to drive across Germany in 2007, I looked for ROETGEN and STOLBERG which are posted on the sign in the 'photo.

It would only add 7 km / 4 miles to my trip to go via 50°43'04.98"N 006°15'32.23"E.

I took a 'photo pretty much from the same position as the 1944 one (it was raining, the print of the 1944 'photo was getting wet, I had a new camera and was trying to keep dry under an umbrella and I was standing on the edge of a road).

Job half done. I'm nether American or ex-military but who was the guy in the 1944 'photo?

I posted on Google Earth in March 2008:-

Who is this WW2 US Army Officer? - Google Earth Community

    Not a squeak.

By great good fortune I stuck up the question here:-

    http://www.ww2f.com/information-requests/33680-who-us-army-officer.html

    BINGO:- 20th August 2009.

I emailed stillpix@nara.gov as suggested and received this:-

Sgt. Joseph H Kadelic is still listed in the 'phone book but the number has been disconnected. He's listed as being 94 years of age. I Skyped 'Barbara' at the local Post Office who cannot divulge any information due privacy issues. She recommended I write Snail Mail to the still listed address.

Thank you to everyone who's offered advice. 10/10 all round. I'll be Skyping the National Archives & Records Administration to thank them as well.

I look forward to making contact with Sgt. Joseph H Kadelic and/or his family and I might even go and visit them. Why not? I've driven across America 9 times after all. Wonderful country.

Please private message me and I look forward to iChating or Skyping. There's so much more to do.

    That is great news.

I was confident the NARA could help you.

Next trip to College Park, I will obtain a high-resolution scan of the photo.

What line of work are you in if you don't mind? That's some great detective work, and if you are not a policeman, maybe you should apply at your earliest convenience! Make sure you keep us informed of your progress, and make sure you get his story too. Mark it up RTF (report to follow) and stay with the program.

I'm not in any 'particular' line of work. In this case I just wanted to find out the identity of Sgt. Joseph H Kadelic. I will now try and make contact with him / his family. They may not be receptive at all. Do please email me at 8002reverse[AT]gmail.com with your location (time difference considerations) and 'phone number and I'll Skype you. \(o_O)/ Thanks again for everyone's help.

On Friday, 18 February, I found and scanned this photo at the NARA II, College Park.

If you would like a high-res. copy, just let me know.
