My name is Daryl and I'm 37. My grandfather (who raised me as a son) was a WWII vet. He passed some years ago and left me with a lot of questions that he would not answer about his war experience. I know most of this was for my own benefit, but now I am trying to find out more about his part for posterity and personal fullfillment.

My grandmother is still alive and tells of some of the stories but there was a lot he just kept to himself.

What I know about him scarce. His name is Edward Bruinsma and served in the 7th army, 242nd division from 9,AUG,44 - 2,JAN,46.He was a 745 rifleman and was a scout in the battle of the bulge.

According to grandma he came home with a distinguished service award that he refused to admit to. He thought it was redundant to get this award since he already had a ribbon for his participation in the Battle of the Bulge.

I am trying to pin down some of the battles and areas he may have been and the extent of his role in the war. My grandmothers brother was saddened that he did not get a 21 gun salute at his funeral. He said Ed deserved it for his contributions.

I am very excited I have found this forum and look forward to learning all I can about this part of our American history.

Welcome to the group, Daryl! We're glad to have you. One of my grandfathers served in WWII briefly. Unfortunately, I did not find this out until after he passed away. You must be very proud of your grandfather. :)

Most likely it was the 242nd Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Infantry Division. The US did not number divisions that high.

Look for the 42nd ID and you can find info on the 242nd IR.
