having looked at the members list! it appears the forum is used mainly by the faithful and dedicated, which is a pity, as such a lot of you are missing out, even if you only took took part in polls or acknowledged some part that was of interest to you, come on and give it a go,it would be nice if you had an input, this is fun here,so lets hear from you..:)

ray... I agree. Even if you came and learned something you knew nothing about,,,, there is so much more to enjoy. Especially our fellow rogues! You find more helpful folk around here than a video store. Thanks for the reminder ray :)

doesn't hurt to go through the archives ladies and gents even back to the first postings, you will find some good stuff in there that has been overlooked for far too long .......

I fully agree with Ray, E and all. There has been tons of great debates and info shared here in the past that might be of interest to everyone. If you wern't even mildly interested in War, military history in general-militaria, war games, reenacting, reading war related books, watching the TV shows, the movies, interested in Veterans-you wouldn't have bothered to sign up here-now would ya?

Ray, I've noticed the same thing as I was looking through the members list. Many signed up, posted two or three times and haven't been heard from since. The site has over 10,000 members and about 1000 are active (although I'm not sure what qualifies someone as "active"). That's about 10%, which I guess isn't bad. What's more important is the quality of the posts. There are some tremendously knowledgeable folks on board whose posts are always top rate. If you have a question (and I've had many), they are considerate of us who are a little lost, and generally can provide an answer or a direction to research. That's what makes this site so enjoyable.

exactly lou, maybe some are in awe of those that are very knowledgeable and feel there out of their depth,or maybe embarrassed,or feel its not for them.active! I would say you appear regularly, not daily or even weekly, but not to go into hibernation, the forum has a cross section of various topics/postings to look at or enter in to,so I don't see the reasons to abstain, were all at different stages of info and knowledge and some possibly little or no experience, either way its here to assist /help or advise,or plain entertain,ray..

Another possibility is that some come here only to get info-which is OK, but is still sad they they don't even say hello and those are the ones who are missing out on the "benefits" of participating here. A great example is-that they are not meeting new people nor are making new friends. In that alone, THEY are the ones to lose out.

I think that it is also very intimidating. There are some very knowledgeable rouges here and many do not wish to look like a fool.
Another intimidation is IMHO the rep. I was scared that I would be found a fool by most and only averaged about 2-3 posts per week. It took me around 4 months just to get my first rep points. Even then I think it was so others didn't have to stare at the "jolly rancher" anymore.

Don't sell yourself short, Mike. I've always found your posts to be pertinent and interesting. I agree there is a bit of an intimidation factor, but as a former teacher and having a graduate degree in history, I soon overcame it and realized that I had something to contribute. As for the rep, I was so clueless, I didn't even know what it was about, and when I got my first salute, I had to search the new member forum to figure it out.

ah okay, I am a mod on a music forum and this problem happens often with activity, its a shame people come looking for answers they need and decide not to contribute or stay active in the community, most of us came here because we were lost and we didnt have stories so we needed to find the answers, this community has helped so much, but i think there is a large amount of people who dont use forums the same way they would the social network sites. I love this community i've been given so much help and guidance i couldnt think about not being a member here.

That happens to me sometimes too. I find an interesting new site, sign up and I forget the site existed and or just never go back because of lack of time to do so ;-))

Another thing that has happened to me in the past was that I signed up to several sites and either lost the site addy and or forgot m username and passwords. Sometimes signing up for a few diff sites at the sametime can cause one to be forgetful and you just forget that you found a place and there it is ;-))

We have over 11,000 members but only 55 have made 1000 or more posts, and several of those people, including a couple of top 10s have departed. I think the best way to get more active participation is to make sure we each invite our friends who share our study of the war and make them join in!

I think that the main problem is that 9 out of every 10 people I welcome never make more than one post. It seems strange people would go out of their way to post up an introduction but never follow up in the forum.

Upping the quality of the posts is step one.

The favourite/top ... of WW2 and What if? threads are not inspiring to say the least.

The political discussions are not all that interesting either if you are european.

Seems the trouble with these one post ponies is they join up just to get info or an answer to one question ..........they get it and are never seen again..............so I must be glutton for punisment because im forever asking questions and no bugger answers:D
