    There is a lot of debate as to what the OFFICIAL name of the infamous German assault rifle was called. Was it the MP44 or the StG44?
    I've been getting mixed messages from every forum I've been to, and I'm wondering what you guys were thinking.
    Regards,
    Mike.

    The first model was christened MP-43. Renamed StG-44 when modified and adopted for army-wide service.

    Wasn't it only given the designation MP for political reasons, namely to get approval from Hitler to put the weapon into production? (Obviously that is a very basic description but I'm sure I have seen that mentioned in various books, just can't remember which ones!)

    In April 1944, Adolf Hitler decreed that the MP 43 be renamed the MP 44. In July 1944, at a meeting of the various army heads about the Eastern Front, when Hitler asked what they needed, a general exclaimed, "More of these new rifles!". This caused some confusion (Hitler's response is reputed to have been "What new rifle?"), but once Hitler was given a chance to test-fire the MP 44, he was impressed and gave it the title Sturmgewehr. Seeing the possibility of a propaganda gain, the rifle was again renamed as the StG 44, to highlight the new class of weapon it represented, translated "Storm (Assault) rifle, model 1944", thereby introducing the term

    Actually, from what I infer, the MP43 was a completely different weapon. The MP43 was the predecessor, and looks quite different, actually.
    As to the name, and how it changed to SturmGewehr, sniper 1946 is "spot on." Probably Hitler's only reasonable decision of the war. How else could you describe such a revolutionary new weapon?

    Yes - as we constantly have to keep saying on this Forum, all firearms ( and certainly all automatic ones ) can only be legally owned in the UK without a licence if they have been deactivated.

    Hello guys I have a cool Photos of Stg-44 in my Albums ,so I'll be very pleased from you if you visit it!!
    Sturm = Assault in German
    Gewehr = Rifle + Pistolle = Pistole or SMG = Sub machine Gun!
    But The Germans considered it as gewehr more than a SMG!!
