This unit liberated my village in Normandy in August 21st, 44.
This is 20years that i try to make know this unit in France.
I have a website OLD HICKORY. I have created an assocation which pays tribute to men who has fighted in my country.

    Very sincerely

    Hello!
    Excuse me for my English.
My village calls Illiers-l'Evêque, 15miles from the south of the city Evreux.
I have read your veteran's story, Mr Sanford then i have decided to record myself on the forum. I have put one plaque( with The PFC Sanchez, 117th), in tribute to the PFC Richard Lyczynski ( 30th Rec. Troop, KIA August 22, 44 at Pacy sur Eure), four years ago.
His jeep was destroyed by a minen. There were three inside: lycynski, Barnfield and one unknowne person. I have one picture with Richard on it, in his jeep, five minutes before he died. And another on his "death bed ". Of course i didn't put the second one on the web site. I put flowers on his grave at the cemetery at Omaha Beach.
Could you ask Mr Sanford if he had a special creest for his unit, the 30th REc Troop.

    Thank you!
    René

    Hello Custon!
My Father was in the 120th Infantry, 30th Division (Old Hickory)! The 117th,119th,& the120th Infantry of Old Hickory fought side by side during the War. Slipdidgit has been talking to Old Hickory who has a great load of information. I learned what my Father went through thanks to Slipdigit & Old Hickory. My Dad passed in 1983 & He wouldn't talk to much about it. So I need information like others do and look forward to the post from this forum.

    René,

Firstly, don't concern yourself about your English. I am sure that your ability to understand English is better than my ability to understand French.:D While we prefer English in this forum, if you cannot make yourself understood or cannot understand what we are saying, type the word or phrase in French and we'll figure it out and we'll do the same.

I am out of town at present. I should be home the this week.

    Hello Custon!
I looked over your web page for the 30th Division and came across a picture of Mr. Guiseppe P. Scutti from the 120th Infantry, 30th Division of Old Hickory. He was with my Father since the start of Boot Camp. He was from Philadelphia Pa.. My Father has his signature in his Christmas Greetings 1943 from Camp Atterbury, Indiana on the back cover. My Father has wounded next to Mr. Guiseppe P. Scutti name in the Christmas Greetings 1943. My Dad kept a record of everyone that went thru boot camp. You can see on my albums under IBBARR or in the Gallery under Members albums (IBBARR).
The web site looks great but I can't read French! I wish I could.

    Hello Custon!
In the Christmas Greetings 1943 from Camp Atterbury,Indiana from my Father's Company (120th Infantry) next to Max P. Foster my Dad wrote wounded. Max P. Foster was a Technicans Forth Grade by Christmas 1943. Robert L. Edwards was also a Technicians Fourth Grade in 1943 Christmas. My Father has KILLED next to his name. Now I know he died in Mortain. My Dad was 20yrs old keeping records of his comrades. My cousin is looking for members of the 120th Infantry. He was named after my Dad. He was born the day Dad landed in Normandy. I sending him this information. Thank You,

    hello IBBARR
Guiseppe told me that his friend Edward (origin Nash county NC have 28 years)was with him on the hill 314 and he (guiseppe) could be shot instead of Edward. There are two hills around Mortain:Hill 314 and 285.Men of the 30th division fought bravely against german élite units. The 2nd battalion the 120th infantry régiment was on the hill 341 and 1st battalion was on the hill 285.All the division stopped germans troups on their way to Avranches. Thanks to the 30th division, germans could not reach Avranches.Germans could not séparate the 3rd and 1st army US.The anti tank played a part ( a roll) in the victory however they had a lot of casualties
My friend Frank Towers could tell you more about that; I am modest historian
    sincerely

    Hi Rene,
I might have located Max P. Foster. I been calling all day. The Max I'm trying to call is 90yrs old which fits the time period were looking at. I will keep trying the number I got in California & hopefully it is Guiseppe's friend Max.

    Good work Rene',

Mr. Sanford called me and we talked. He is much improved and we have made plans for me to go see him this Sunday afternoon. I have a lot of stuff to carry over there from you and others, pictures and the like. He is anxious to finish his "memoirs."

We talked a bit the other night about the men who were KIA. He remembers the times and cause of death of most of the 30th Recon men, especially those who were with the company in England. I'm going to see if I can get those recorded and post them.

He did not remember your village specifically, Rene'. He said often times he passed through places without stopping and never knew the name of the area. Plus, with the French language structure of the names oftentimes not being familiar to him, the place names didn't stick unless he stayed there for a while or if something notable to him occured there.

    Hello Rene,
If I find the right Max P. Foster I will e-mail all information to you with his permission. There is one problem and I hope we are not too late. This pass July 19 2009 one Max P. Foster passed away in California and I hope it wasn't Guiseppe's friend. I found 3 names and only one has a listed phone number. I have a 3 hour time difference so I tried calling at a reasonable time. I just hope the number I have is not the same Max that passed in July.
    Sincerely,
    IBBARR

    Hello slidigit and ABBar
    Ok sir Barr thank you
It is possible that Sir Sanford did not pass thourgh my village. Because there were two columns .The 120th and 119th .The 117th was in reserve behind the 119th d'infantry. The 30th Rec Tpr was localised on the right of the 120th along of the river "Avre" at border between the XIX AND XV Corps. There were the of 113rd of calvary On the left of the 119th between the 30th ID and 28th ID.There was no battle im my village. The men of the 30th ID called this périod "The Rat Race".The old unhabitants remember a jeep and three men inside of it.They had an MG 12,7mm and a radio (Characteristic of the reconnaissance troop). The jeep just passed there. Later one column the 120th passed through my village with....The Lt Frank W Towers.Barnefield 30th Rec Trp was origin from Brooklin NY
