"Gaza students won't learn about the Holocaust this year. Angry protests by Palestinians have disrupted tentative plans to introduce information about the Nazi genocide of 6 million Jews into the curriculum in U.N. schools."

St. Petersburg Times | tampabay.com | Know it now.

And people wonder why the Middle East is still in turmoil. They can't even agree on history, let alone solutions.

I dunno here Lou, I’m of two minds on this, sort of. On the one hand I feel the UN should limit their educational endeavors to the basics of literacy; "reading, grammar, and mathematics", with the "history/social studies" limited to the generic, i.e. how republics, democracies, constitutional monarcies, theocracies, etc. function in theory. With the specifics of local history funded by and paid for by those local governments.

On the other hand, the UN should have some say in the content of the text books if the funding is mostly from UN nations and accepted by the Gaza populace. I would hate to think the EU and US funding was used to propagate Holocaust Denial. That seems counter productive as well.

The UN is supposed to be neutral and the Holocaust is a "vital component" of sorts between this feud in the Middle East. By trying to teach the Holocaust in a sense they may give the impression to some Arabs that they are siding with the Israelis. It will only take 1 person to protest and he rest will run with it

At the same time, I believe the Holocaust should be studied and remembered.

What about the rockets fired on schools, and hospitals? The women who strap bombs to their chests and walk on buses and so on? Not to mention that I'd sooner believe a that there are giant red apes in space than trust the arab or israeli media's. Or the "aftermath" filmed in staging acts.

Look I don't in particular support either side on this affair, but please don't make it look one sided as if only one side is bad and the other just innocent....but more than that...PLEASE don't turn this forum into an Arab vs. Israeli who's good and who's evil debate... :)

Fully share your point of view but what's the alternative? not talking about it at all? Considering the mess the situation in Palestine is, anything one says is bound to be considered inflammatory by someone.
A willingness to compromise is noticeably lacking, not really surprising when extremists in one camp believe in "holy war" and those in the other that God has explicitly given them Palestine as the "promised land" (I know I oversimplify a few hundred years of theological debates but I don't think the fighters give much credit to theological niceties either).

Lou since having done service in the area and will probably go back at some stage, can tell you both sides don't give a rip about their own history except to use the words "promised land". sadly they will never understand they can never have long lasting peace.......... talking at the table never worked during biblical times and even the present and never will, we must try and understand this and as westerners most cannot

I'm more than willing to express my views an opinions as as many others. I'm not at all saying of course that we should all be quite and never speak of these things...just perhaps not on this forum...or at least do it in the general section or something. But that aside....I don't think a compromise will ever be reached, and so far it hasn't for the last 1,000 + years.

I do have pretty strong opinions on this matter, with some favoring the Israeli's and some the Palestinians. I'm afraid however that writing a whole post about this will simply start a huge uproar with both sides.

As for theological debates....well.....let's just say that I would sooner believe a giant red ape in space ;)

FN it's already been done in the past and postings removed. if we can do it logically and nor religiously from both sides, then have at it. Been there done it and served with the IDF in the past as I mentioned, so I have maybe not for this forum membership but a particular view on all that is happening even in Afghan/Iraq where I have relatives serving and too many young friends

Erich, unfortunately, I think you are correct. Neither side has a hold on "truth" and neither side is willing to admit that the other might have valid points. I suspect that open war between the two is more likely than any peace arrangement. Jews/Muslims, Arabs/Israelis'; it doesn't matter which way you parse it, both sides are entrenched in their ideologies, and compromise isn not a concept they understand.

As for the Holocaust, I fear it is being used as a bludgeon by both sides to demonize the other side. For the Jews, it desecrates what is a defining point of their existence, for the Muslims, it is a weapon to differentiate themselves form their enemies. How sad.

Too true and too sad Lou, I don't see any easy way out of these ideological impasses either.

Mankind has not solved the problems in Palestina after 3000 years, so I don't believe we"ll make it, nor our current politicians, whoever they are. However Jews suffered during the Holocaust and that should never be forgotten. , whether you agree with Israel's policy or not. At the same time the fact that some Palestinians mortar Israel should not make us forget that the large majority of Civilan Palestinians are perfectly innocent and suffer from bombings and are victims. Does the UN teach about them? Just wondering.

The best chance, as any side "winning" militarily would mean an "ethnic cleansing" of the looser, is someone from outside stomping down hard on both sides long enough for things to calm down and paranoia and hate reach levels that will allow peaceful coexistence of both population groups, I strongly fear war weariness alone will not do the trick.
But there seem to be no willing candidates to take the losses (and initially an effective peacekeeping force is likely to get shot at from all sides) and even it there were for this sort of thing to succeed you still need strong leaders (by strong I mean that they can keep their own fanatics under control) with a mutally acceptable plan for the future to eventually allow the peacekeepers to go home. And for now there is a marked shortage of those and, at least on the Arab side, any such leader is likely to get killed before he can do any good.

As long as the killing goes on the extemist on both sides will get enough support to "keep the fires hot".
