I'm starting this thread because i seen no thread or talked to much to people about The battle of hurtgen forest. Right now i reading about a Veteran in US 9th infantry that fought there. I Would like to learn more about the battle and want to hear peoples opinion about the battle and to see accurate maps of the battle. In my opinion the battle would been good if it didn't drag out so long. It was bit chaotic in the battle. (please post a link if any online vet account of the battle) please comment (sorry if this in wrong section) Franz
Hi Franz. Here's a few links to accounts from german soldiers who served in the 272VGD, and were in the Hurtgen Forest during the battle. German Militaria Blog: Forgotten Soldier Eyewitness account by Grenadier Arnulf Wöstmann, 1st Battalion, Gren.Rgt. 753, 326th VGD 272nd VGD at Döberitz - Action in the Eifel
A forgotten battle indeed. If you want to learn more read "Citizen Soldiers" by Stephen Ambrose. There's a whole section in the book about nothing but the Huertgen Campaign.
The movie, When Trumpets Fade, is on that battle. It's like saving private ryan without the hollywood, it's more gritty and gory. One of the best though.
