Walt: Not to be be mean or anything, but it would be easier if you didnt write in all CAPITAL Letters.

True, World War II problary did speed it up, but they could have been granted their freedom post World War I...as the OE and AH Empires were split up, why not free all colonial holdings like the Germans were forced to do?

Secondly, the Communist countries were doing alright post WWII. Look at the USSR/Russia. They got a lot of 'pay back' on the Germans and emerged as the most powerful nation, second to the US of A. They were the most leathal threat the USA faced after WWII. Look how long it took before the Cold War/Arms Race came about between the US and USSR/Russia. If the Communists hadnt fared well, then why did China have its first harvist where it produced enough food to feed all of its people?

Ground gains the Soviet Union did aquire, but what goes around comes around. Even with the defeat and reprucussions against the German peoples in 1945 through 1948 and the Berlin wall........the Communists laughing in the Germans faces, and taking pride in all they had done, we must look at the civilian populace of the Soviet Union, what did they gain ? Freedon from the Wermacht and the boot in the back from Stalin. How many of the Soviet peoples were terminated during Stalin's reign ?.......too many, and now look what has happened the last 8/9 years the Soviet Union isn't a super power, with all the smaller states finally attaining their freedom in some way. Even with this the people of these independent states still suffer as they have been used to governmental authority far too long. Only their resilentcy will allow them to survive........so who really won ? No body !

War sucks gentlemen in any way, shape or form.

    Anyone who survived it.

But...it seems to me that the US specifically had the smallest losses (part of being way the heck over here) and, I guess you could say "grew" the most. We definetly had the most prosperous civilian post war era. I know other allies did as well. But Britain got the hell bombed out of it. The Frainch had to live under an occupation. The Soviets faced a leader and government that was just about as ruthless as the one they'd just defeated. True that Germany and Japan were rebuilt, but that's becasue they lost - they were pretty much destroyed. Idunno, maybe it was Canada. [IMG]

In fact there are only 2 countries who benefit from the war: Russia and the US.

    Russia:
-conquered the Baltics, Poland, Hungary, Bulgary, Roemenie, Yoegoslavie, Austria, Tzjech, Slovaqia, Eastern Germany, some isles from japan, Manchuria, ...
-captured technology from Germany and also imprisoned some scientist

    USA:
-after WW2 they became the most economical power of the world
-brought Von Braun and his team to the US

The Yanks, without a doubt. They gained very much for very little.

USSR lost way too many of her population; her Western districs had been turned to a moon landscape by the Germans scorched earth policy, it took 'em way until the 1950-ies to recover.

Additionally they never recovered from the fear of being vulnerable or coming under attack ever again, this trauma ("Never again!") fed the Cold war.

    Cheers,

No war on the US continent so definitely the US are the winners by a clear margin.
Hard to say how long they could have stayed out of war ( if Japan and Germany had not declared war )as they still in 1941 tried to keep out of it I think.

Russia lost some 20 million people which is a huge price to pay for the countries´ they occupied and the army power ( tanks, artillery etc ) they had achieved. Also nazism was dead.Probably though Stalin enjoyd this like a good game of cards in the end.

It has to be the USA

    1) The only country where living standards continued to rise during the war.
    2) Made significant profits selling arms to Britain and France pre-Lend Lease.
    3) Gained immesurably from Britain in effect giving them inventions without patent cover.
    4) Displaced Britain and France from most of their pre-war markets (as they had in WW1).
    5) War production saved the faltering New Deal policies of FDR.

Several good outcomes for Uncle Sam there!

    Everyone but the USSR;

Today, the Union itself no longer exists and its constituents compared to other former major combatants are in a terrible state of affairs.

The USSR certainly gained a lot: territory, her industry became HUGE, it gained political power, national pride, the regime became stronger, etc.

However, it indeed lost 30.000.000 people plus another 30.000.000 who had been killed by Stalin in the whole decade of 1930... Its agriculture never recovered from the war...

But it's a shame for the Russian people that their leaders didn't watch in the future horizont... After Stalin died, the country stopped growing economically. Then, with Kruschev it stayed in 0, with Brezhnev it started falling and it collapsed with Gorbachev... Just if they would have known how to take advantages of what they gained with the war, the USSR still existed.

The yanks did know how to take an advantage; their country was untouched, unharmed, everybody owed USA money, the depression was very at the past, the industry and work were reactivated, it had political and military power, etc. It took the advantage of how weak France and Britain became to let many countries to get their political independence and then conquer them economically... Quite smart and bitchy, isn't it? ;)
