I would have enlisted in the army, and after that I'm not sure how a recruit got posted. I'm sure that I, like most everyone would have wanted to get into the action early on, that is before the coffins started coming home, along with the young men missing arms and legs as well. Anyway, I'm sure dumb ole me would have done everything possible to go into the infantry, and hopefully go airborne if I had known about it then. The army has a way of doing things that benefits the service as a whole, not the individual, so who knows where I would end up. And that includes the MOS, unit and overseas assignments.
1/3rd of Waffen-SS troops died in WW2. Most had been wounded in action, some of them permanently. All the survivors, no matter where they came from, became the hated pariahs of Europe. And a lot of them spent a decade in Soviet work camp hell, were drafted into the French Foreign Legion to die in IndoChina, or were sent to prison for that matter. Great choice.........
If British - Army Commando units and take part in the St. Nazaire Raid (hopefully live) If American - a pilot with the Eagal Squadrons in the RAF, before returning to the USAF If German - possibly a sailor on a U-boat you may notice all three choices have a strong possibility of a short life-span..........but hey, it would be one hell of a way to go!!!
I would be in the Red Army. 8th Guards Army. I would wear this: http://www.tridentmilitary.com/New-Photos14/scs52b.jpg
Maybe a photographer, but NOT a videographer (at least 35 years later). You might try combat cameraman (8mm or 16mm) back then
I quite agree with you Tomcat. That has been pointed out a few times. I wonder if anyone really goes through and reads all the posts so far? http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-general/24222-soldier-strips-romance-out-life-war.html
Well, Duh! I think what folks are posting is where and what they would LIKE to do in the service in WWII. I'm sure that first choices in "real life" didn't happen very often. So the title of the thread itself is misleading... "where would you serve" should be "where would you like to have served"....
Or rather, "where would you have fanticized about serving" is more like it. I'm sure everyone is all full of p1ss and vinegar when first signing up, but when it gets ugly, most are like Donald Sutherland's charactor in "The Dirty Dozen" when asked if he wanted to be a general. He stated, "I'd rather be a civilian, sir." Most everyone who really served where many Rogues claim to want to have served would rather just go home and not talk or think about it any more.
I would prefer to be either a British Knight of Arnhem An American soldier of the 2nd Ranger Division attacking Point du Hoc or as a German Fallschrimjager invading Crete.
can i pick another one?? im going to anyways.... home guard in britain, think about it, no real fighting, hot meal every day & you get to see your family all the time. It would be like a constant leave.
I'd have wanted to be one of the Finnish guerrillas, such as Simo Hayha, ripping the Red Army out a new a$$hole
I would serve as a wehrmacht soldier France,a paratrooper in Hitlers eagle nest,or as a U.S. artillery man in Italy
