    d. Gaddie-Did you ever resolve this? I'm curious because my Dad was in New Guinea and Luzon. He was a Medic in HQ Co, 1st Battalion, 169th Inf Reg, 43rd Div. He seldom talked about it but I was able to pry a few things out of him. I've been tracing his unit's activities and has really been a labor of love. Just wish I could find someone with more first-hand knowledge (a vet from his unit). Those boys had a rough time.

To Matiman I ordered his records from St. Louis on Nov. 8, 2009. Hadn't heard anything so called this week. They finally assigned the file a number and said I would probably get them by March 15th. That would be over 4 months since put in for them. If I don't get them by that date, will call again. I am still searching other avenues. My Dad belonged to VFW post in Florida when he lived there, I have written them to see if they might have information on him. My Dad didn't talk much about the War. He did say New Guinea was a rough place. The heat was terrible. I will keep checking till I find the answers. Thanks for asking. d. gaddie

This is further update on trying to get my Dad's records from National Archives. I called them today, March 9th. They had assigned me a file number and said I get it in March. However, today they told me it would be mid June. Since I been waiting since Nov, 2009, she moved me to Medium Priority status, whatever that means. She said they have so many inquiries, it just taking them that long. However, from checking with some of you who have ordered files, I believe I am waiting longer than anyone. So all I can say, is if anyone is ordering files be prepared to wait a very long time. dng.

National Archives called me on my Dad's records today, March 12. They told me they have no records as they were destroyed in the fire of 1973. I was really disappointed as been waiting since early Nov. 2009 to get them. I guess now I will never know the Division, Company and Unit he was in. Does any one have any other suggestions on where to look? I have contacted two different VFW posts he belonged to and they had nothing. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. Do you think their headquarters would have anything? I hope others looking have much better luck than I have had. Thanks for all the help everyone has given previously. dng

I've found this site that has information on the Signal Corps with a mention of members debarking from Fort Ord. The 287th. May be a shot in the dark
    Camp Gordon Johnston Association

Have you tried Goggling "Signal Corps New Guinea". I also found this site:
    16th Signal Battalion
Also there was a Fort Crowder in South west Missouri, could he have been here instead of Ft. Leonard Wood?
I realize these may not help at all but hopefully weed out a few.

To Blak Thanks so much for these sites. I will check into these and see if one of them could help find my Dad's unit etc. I will check into Fort Crowder. I only thought it could be Ft. Leonard Wood as I thought it only fort in Missouri at time he could have been in Missouri. All I know for sure is that he was at a Fort in Missouri and that my Mom and Dad got married on Nov. 29, 1942 in Joplin, Missouri by an army chaplain. I have their marriage license. My Mom took a bus there and they were married while he was at fort. I may still be able to find the information I need. Also when the lady called me from archives, she said only thing they had on my Dad was his last pay voucher. It didn't have company or unit information. She said if I wanted a copy, it would cost $20. Does any one think I should get this? I didn't think archives charged children of deceased veteran. Would like to know if any one else has heard of this. dng

I realize I may be adding too much but wanted to add I found this site.
    Camp Crowder
It is a web site dedicated to a signal corps member and possibly you could contact the owners/family members for ideas or help also. Good Luck

I really think my Dad could have been at Camp or Fort Crowder. It was part of Joplin, Missouri area. As I wrote my parents were married in Joplin Missouri. My Dad was in the signal corps and this seems to be were they trained them. Will check into this further. Thanks so much for the information. dng
