Sorry if this had been posted before. We'll have the 3rd MarDiv AAR up soon. NEW GOOGLE EARTH DATA FOR THE BATTLE OF IWO JIMA
Students of the battle will find this useful as well. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/Iwo_Jima_Historical_Map_(Poster).jpg
OpanaPointer: I just couldn’t resist a return post to yours. It jolted me back to World War Two, and to Iwo Jima – where I worked with the same topographic map that you show, in a close air support group directing bombing and strafing missions in support of front line troops – mostly in grid squares 166, 183 and 184. The map was about two feet by three feet in size. I've been trying for years to get a reproducton of that map, but with no success. A kind friend did send me a half-size copy some time ago, which I have framed and hung in my den. I seldom think or talk about the war --but I enjoy checking in here every once in awhile to see what everybody else thinks. Your post was an echo from the past. And I thank you. vcs-ww2 . – . – .
vcs-ww2, thank you for your service, first off! I was stunned by that map as well. It was especially important as it had the exact grid used in the After Action Report of the 3rd Marine Division, a report that is coming down the pike in a short time. I wish I'd had it when I visited Iwo.
Great find OP... thanks for sharing! I felt like a kid in a candy store... didn't know what to pick at first. all the best, Jem
VCS, Durring your duty in the close air support group, did you have contact with any of the FG/FS in the 'Sunsetters' 7th fighter command? It's an area of special interrest to me and i'm always seeking knowledge about the VLR groups. Cresy
