    Hi everyone,

I've reached a dead end while trying to gather info on my Grandfather's service in the U.S. Army. I sent in a request to the National Archives but all I got back was a letter about the 1973 fire.

I do have his Honorable Discharge form which lists general information. What I really wanted to find is really specific info.

Here is some info from his Honorable Discharge form:
(This is a copy that I have, so some of the field descriptions are hard to read)

    -Name:
    Clark Rufus J

    -Grade:
    Tec/4

    -Arm or Service:
    MED
    *(Medical?)

    -Component:
AUS *(Not sure what this is)

    -Organization:
    Med Det 32nd Inf

-Date of Induction: 5 Aug 42
-Date of Entry Into Active Service: 21 Aug 42
-Place of Entry Into Service: CP Croft SC
-Military Occupational Specialty and Number: Surgical Technician (861)
    -Military Qualification: Medical Badge

    -Battles and Campaigns:
New Guinea, Northern Solomons, SO Philippines, Luzon

    -Decorations and Citations:
Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with 4 bronze service stars,
Purple Heart with 1 Oak leaf cluster GO 9 HQ 7th Div 45,
Good Conduct Medal SO #40 HQ 32nd Inf 44

    -Wounds Received In Action:
APT 6 Dec 44 *(What does APT stand for?)

    -Remarks:
No Days Lost Under AW 107
    Lapel Button Issued
    ABR Score (2 Sep 45) 88
    ERO 8 Aug 42 to 20 Aug 42

If anyone could help deciphering some of the form codes or offer any other info on my Grandfather's service from the information I've given I would be very grateful.

Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio has a copy of the "Green Books" that list information about each medical unit.

I lost the name of a professor that works there at the AMEDD school and museum, but they will direct you to the right person if you decide to call them to gather more information.

Many thanks Hans! I'll give them a call Monday and see what I can find out. Will report back.

I forgot one thing, could you tell me what the abbreviations stand for that I posted above? Under Wounds Received "APT", component "AUS", and what the comments under Remarks mean?

I'm pretty sure AUS means Army of the United States and APT is referring to the Army in the Pacific Theatre. I'm not 100% sure about the latter.

Close, Hans. APT stands for Asiatic-Pacific Theater, which is where he served and was wounded.

Check this thread for more details on getting information and any missing medals.

    -Decorations and Citations:
Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with 4 bronze service stars,
Purple Heart with 1 Oak leaf cluster GO 9 HQ 7th Div 45,
Good Conduct Medal SO #40 HQ 32nd Inf 44

This section details his service. He was awarded the campaign medal for serving in the APT, and was awarded 4 battle stars for participating in the named campaigns (New Guinea, Northern Solomons, SO Philippines, Luzon). He was wounded twice, hence the Pirple Heart and the Oak Leaf Cluster. The Gooc Conduct Medal was awarded for good service.

I believe that AUS stands for Army of the United States, an indication that he was a draftee as opposed to RA Regular Army, USAR Army Reserve, and NG National Guard.
