i like a58..i do same..and im not paranoid..its ingrained in some to be aware of their surroundings..whether its thru training and experience..or even carried on into civillian business trips. you do realise there is a whole industry advising businesses how to stay safe travelling..ive always adhered to it..its fascinating and it works. i dont see terrorists everywhere..but i am always going to be aware oof my surroundings..be it airports or offices or street markets..a58 is spot on

Agree with urqh and A58. I try to be aware of my surroundings. Not looking for terrorists around every corner but I think it would be foolish to think other 911 types haven't come across our porous borders. If the guys standing out front of Home Depot looking for work can walk across it then well funded Muslim extremists can. Looking for criminals or threats in general. I go on ride-alongs with my friend (ride-alongs should be a requirement) who is a policeman here. His shift does exactly what the officers in Tacoma did. They meet at a small store, sit and drink a cup of coffee and talk. I'm sure since the shootings they are more aware than ever about anyone walking in and out of the place.

Thanks for the support guys. Much obliged. I figured that I was gonna get hosed on this one, but it's good that I figured wrong for once.

Another thing to consider, if an unpleaseant situation ever presents itself when you are around, direct intervention is not always needed, or even neccessary. An accurate and detailed after action report to the authorites is worth it's weight in gold you know. No need to make things "messy" if too many innocents are present and too close for comfort.

A58, sorry, I did not mean to criticise general vigilance, I too try to remain aware of my surroundings and hope I succeed (but who knows really). My point is that it must be done in a way that doesn't attract attention or lead to the creation of a paranoid climate where all Muslims are regarded as probable terrorists. Urqh may remember a poster put up in barracks around the UK way back when (and it is a tribute to the state of the TA that one is still up in our officers mess toilets) with a picture of a 'typical' IRA-type in a balaclava and a chap in a business suit with the words 'which one is the terrorist? Both!' The point is that no terrorist will go out of his way to look like a terrorist but will do his best to camoflage himself.

Also, just on a point of semantics, you say 'arab-type' but since 'arab' refers to people of a very specific ethnic group which I very much doubt any of us would be able to pick out in a group of Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Nuristanis, Baluchis, Iranians, Iraqis and so on. The idea that we are fighting Arabs is wildly inaccurate at best.

One other thing, many Muslims (including Iran, Iraq and numerous other nations) condemn the Taliban just as certain Christian groups condemn the KKK, that doesn't stop the Taliban being fundamentalist Muslims or the KKK (or those nutjobs who protest at soldiers funerals) from being fundamentalist Christians. Thinking about it the word 'fundamentalist' is rather unpleasant as it suggests that these people are only following the basics of the religion, the main tennets of it, rather than persuing their own particularly vile interpretation of it. Interesting thought that...

I'm good with all that Stefan, no problems. The "arab-type" phrase is a vernacular of mine, that's all. Actually, the way I use it is a much nicer and very much more acceptable term than what I usually hear in certain circles. I am familiar with the differences of the people who populate the Middle Eastern nations.

And the fundalmentalists of any religion really makes it hard on rest of the mainstreamers. Every organization has them to an extent come to think of it. I reckon that we will always have them too. Turds come in all colors, shapes and fragrances you know....

    And all bad ;)

Agreed entirely though, I just think it's a particularly interesting choice of words we have chosen to adopt, I wonder how Christians worldwide would feel if someone suggested that the KKK and various other groups were simply following their religion particularly strictly. It's an interesting idea anyhow.

That site is awesome, 'because without America there is no free world!' Who are these chumps???

As for the article, just a group of tossers doing what they do best, it just gets reported because they are 'middle-eastern.' I wonder how many flights are disrupted by idiot white guys?

    Haha, the irony is deliscious!

Don't worry about that Tex, no fear of middle easterners thinking I'm a friend on my next flight!

Do y'all have the poster still, and if so, could it be posted here on the forum for us all to see? I have been hearing of it frequently, and I'd like to see it if possible.

I have a fun story to share...I have a buddy at work, who happens to be a 1st generation immigrant from Iraq. His brother, who is older, is in the Army and currently awaiting deployment to.....Afghanistan. Anyways....about a week ago we had him and his wife over for dinner for the first time. His kids and my kids were out back playing in the fort I built the kids...complete with foxholes....and we went into my office while the ladies were hanging out. He asked me about my guns...so i showed him. Opening the safes, I explained what each one was...caliber, use, period, what not. He was looking at them and he asked, "Wow...you think you need that many guns?" I replied, "I know too many people like you...." He laughed. Heartily. Just depends on the company you keep maybe.

A58, sorry, I can't find it online so you'll have to wait until I'm next in my Barracks which could be in 6 months time I'm afraid. Sorry.
