We are in the beginnings of a snow storm that is currently covering Michigan, Lake Michigan, Wisconsin, part of Illinois. The wind is about 45mph right now off the lake in front of my house, but we haven't gotten much more than 5-6 inches of snow. The drifting however, has a 3 foot drift at the end of my driveway. Thank God for 4-wheel drive and high ground clearance. Every school within 100 miles is closed, the county offices shut down, my wife's office shut down, but rest assured....though NOBODY should be on the roads...Walmart will be open and busy. Too cruddy to get to work but they always find a way to get to the Wal.
Yikes! It was sleeting about 10 pm last night, but is above freezing now in the land of Potomac Fever. I have a 4 wheel drive (w/o the high clearance) , but it still took an extra 30 minutes to get into work. Luke, stay home! Let the Wallie fans drift to wally world!
Looks like you are getting that front that went through Montana a couple of days back. It got cold as hell here in Billings (only above zeor in the late afternoon), but it didn't drop much snow here in town. Out in the country it did, a few feet in the mountains as well. Billings only got about six inches of snow, and little wind so it's pretty nice even if cold. Supposed to be back up in the 20s and such by the week-end. I guess Fargo (where a buddy lives) got pretty nasty too, but not the drifts you are talking about.
To think, south of the Equator, everyone's enjoying a lovely summer. Strange how these things work out, eh? Anyways, I hope anyone with snow problems doesn't get too buried in it. Snow + ice + roads = a very bad thing.
Hope you guy's are alright. They said that the temperature was supposed to drop all day. Rain, Ice and snow so far it has been high winds with occasional rain plus sunshine. Its 2 p.m. and no snow or ice like predicted hope it stays that way.
Sounds like he's over in the lake effect region. We just had a skim of snow on the ground here and it was raining on my way in to work. On the other hand they are predicting 60+mph winds and apparently they've already started. More snow tonight as well so tomorrow may be an interesting commute. (I live in Michigan just north of Detroit)
You all need to come spend some time down here in FL....mid-80's today and sunny. I think I will die of system-shock when I go from this weather to Telluride on saturday...they're getting 2-feet of snow this week and temperatures are between 0 - 32degrees F....that could quite easily be an 80 degree change for me!
There was a cute quote on one of Ken Burns' documentaries once, it was about our National Parks, and when speaking of Yellowstone Park one of the superintendents (or somebody) said; "there are three seasons in Yellowstone, July, August and Winter!" The now deceased Mike Mansfield, Senator from Montana was once asked what we Montanans did in the summer for fun, to which he replied; "well, if it happens to fall on a week-end we close up the shops and all go fishing."
Funny enought that your Storm is coming my way if im not mistakes. Lets hope for a day off of school!
well hopefully you'll have better luck than me, we just got a slushy mix today, miserable day, I'd have much rather we have snow
No snow yet in the southern Finland but starting next week in Lapland -35 C degrees, and in the south - 20 to -25 C degrees. Official start for the winter now....
Got a decent snow fall Tuesday night. Maybe 6 inches. Having just moved to the city where it's about 10 degrees warmer, I would hate to see how much there is at my previous residence. Ah, city life. I passed at least three convertibles trying to force their way up steep hills in the snow. Apparently city people don't know how to drive in the snow.
Lake effect snow storm in full awessomeness. I just blazed a path through 16-18 inches of snow and 3 plus foot drifts with my monster snow blower. It's still snowing, another 5-7 inches tonight and 5-7 tomorrow. I remember why I hate this. It's fun for about an hour. All there is to do now is drink or buy a snowmobile and I hate snowmobiles.
We're having our first real cold snap. Temps in the low 30s and high wind. Let me tell you how much I hate the cold. The worst part is that 2 days ago it was near 60. No real snow yet, but, if it holds off all winter, I won't complain.
I know what horrible weather we are having. I live in Windsor, minutes from detroit. If this is a sneak peak of what winter is going to be, were screwed! Where's global warming when you need it!!! it's currently -10 C. with the wind chill it's -21. and i'm in a southern part of Canada... imagine what it's like up north!!! Suzie
Snow? What is that. lol I have never seen snow, but it would be interesting to see if it feels like the frost that builds up in your freezer. It is currently 35 degrees C here, which I believe to be about 96 FH for all you Americans. It is hot, it is muggy and I was already pouring with sweat from work today at 9.00AM.
Good thing that this same weather pattern you are experiencing wasn't there in 1939 for the start of the Winter War. Things might have turned out rather differently....
Although I would love to wish upon you a real snow storm...it's nothing like the frost in your freezer....mostly because you shut the door and that's gone! This is the worst storm I can remember in a long time in sheer volume of snow. It just keeps coming. It appears to be all clear for now but jeez. MIGHT be able to dig wifes van out today if it holds clear. I can still see the path I blew out last night so that's all good. A brisk 19 degrees out this morning.
