Holocaust denial is alive and well in Las Vegas it appears.

A Las Vegas school district is disciplining a teacher who allegedly denied the Holocaust in the classroom but has not suspended her.

Students at Northwest Career and Technical Academy reported to their parents that Lori Sublette, a gym teacher, launched into Holocaust denial during a casual chat session in an "advocacy class," which prepares students for life after high school, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Friday.

Sublette made the alleged comments the Wednesday before Thanksgiving; Sublette was still teaching this week. A school district spokesman said Sublette was being disciplined but would not elaborate.
The students quoted Sublette as saying that information on the Holocaust in history books was doctored or distorted.

Sublette apologized to one parent, the Review-Journal said, but only for conveying her opinion in class and not for denying the Holocaust.

Students have said that Sublette has yet to apologize to them for her comments, and have reported anti-Semitic taunts in the wake of the incident. Police are investigating one such incident, in which a student allegedly texted a number of Jewish students and threatened to slit their throats.

At least she is a "gym teacher" and not in charge of the history section of the school I guess.

It doesn't matter what subject she teaches. This should be cause for suspension , if not firing. The espousal of such views only encourages others to emulate the thinking, as can be seen in the article. Whether we want to believe it or not, teachers, by virtue of their position, can actively affect what the students understand and believe. She needs more than just "discipline".

There was a professor at my University who was let go recently for Holocaust Denial, I don't know much about it as I heard about it in passing from one of my professors. Apparently this person was a teacher who was teaching history!

She should be "assigned" a visit to the National Holocaust Museum during her Christmas break (on her dime).

I don't think so, Jack. The 11 million number is an important one to remember, but my thinking is that the term "Holocaust" is usually reserved for the 6 million Jews. I could be wrong about that, though.

Rememeber what Göbbels and Hitler told in the 1930´s. The bigger the lie, the easier it is to make people believe it... Seems to work today as well.

Right you are Kai. This type of poison is being told all over the world. I guess the ones that deny this will only be proven false if they face such hardships. This is a quote from Koeenraad Elste a writer from Belgium thought it was a good quote.

Negationism means the denial of historical crimes against humanity. It is not a reinterpretation of known facts, but the denial of known facts. The term negationism has gained currency as the name of a movement to deny a specific crime against humanity, the Nazi genocide on the Jews in 1941-45, also known as the holocaust (Greek: fire sacrifice) or the Shoah (Hebrew: disaster). Negationism is mostly identified with the effort at re-writing history in such a way that the fact of the Holocaust is omitted.[13

Perhaps the issue could be resolved in a way we talked about on another thread. We could use the term Shoah for the genocide of the Jews and the term Holocaust for the death of the 11 million. Just a thought.

The different number totals come up every now and then. Both are correct even though they are both approximations. The 11 million is the complete number of deaths orchastrated by the Nazi regime against those inside of its own borders and those nations it over-ran. The extra 5 million are non-Jews who were also victims, the euthanazia victims, the Poles, other Slavs, Czechs, Slovaks, Sloviks, Roma, Gypsy, ect., and then the Socialist/Communists and even Christains who opposed the Nazis.

Six million Jews (approximate), five million others (approximate)= eleven million (approximate).

People who deny the Holocaust are amongst the most ignorant people in the world. I don't understand what their points are. There's so much evidence and documentaries, and so many survivors, I just don't understand.

Plus if the teacher was a gym teacher, it makes me wonder how much history she really knows (obviously not much, or she's really just that ignorant). So disgraceful.

My understanding is that the Holocaust refers to all Nazi Crimes and the term Shoah refers to the death of the nearly 6 million Jews in the death camps? The term is also used by the Jewish community isn't it? Wikipedia also refers to similar things, the section is pretty well sourced as well.

I think she should be corrected but not fired! Teachers have to put up with enough garbage and low pay too, i would not do this job for a million dollars, let alone the chump change they pay teachers! Since i'm not a teacher, i am going to put my two cents in, on this issue from the war that i have studied for decades.

Anyway here's why i think that. There is always some leftist (...) over-reactionary ready to jump on this "issue" screaming "anti-semite! Holocaust deniar! Bad bad!" WHY are these people screaming like chicken little when the issues been dead for 70 years? Do you hear people screaming for the supporters of the mass murderer pol pot (Cambodia, 1970's - over 2 million people murdered) or the perpetrators of the Rwandan Genocide (1994, over 500,000 murdered)? These same whiners are remarkably silent on similar Genocidal crimes unless the victims were Jews, aren't they?

What's more "the holocaust" may not be denied but is certainly worth scrutiny. Note the millions of people that survived the camps(i have met some myself) if the SS were busy murdering them on assembly line basis, why did so many survive? There are many books and articles and videos, that understandably don't get much press, that examine the camps in great detail looking for clues and evidence that the "death camps" were anything more than slave labor camps. They were horribly cruel and people were routinely starved to death (but even so, Herman goering got the idea for them, from: THE BRITISH (Boer war)).

Not only jews were imprisoned there, the inmates were required to wear a star with a different color indicating why they were in the camps. I have seen an old poster of these stars, someone could be thrown into a camp for any of a hundred reasons: Gypsy, criminal, "anti-social", even for being a homosexual (oddly, their star was pink). If anything, the camps probably housed more non-jews than Jews.

Upper level Nazi involvement is clear but the iron-clad proof of involvement extends only as far as Goerring (who was second in the Nazi hierarchy only to Hitler). Goerring set them up initially in the mid 1930's, along with founding the Gestapo, but he was happy to hand off running the whole vile business over to Himmler and Heydrich long before the war started. So Goerring certainly knew of the existence of the camps and probably knew what went on in them, but if he did, he seemed to have very little interest in them, and to not have interfered with how they were run by the SS one way or the other. In fact it is hard to find a quote of his even mentioning the camps after the start of the war - remember Goerring was also the Reich Chief Economic minister, the nominal head of the Luftwaffe, Reich "Master of the Hunt" (sort of chief game warden) along with several other important and not so important titles.

Hitler seems to have cared even less about Goerring about what went on in the camps. He left domestic matters and ruling the occupied territories to Goerring, Himmler, Goebbels, the SS and the Gestapo and the various Reach ministers he appointed. His full attention was occupied by his self-chosen role of warlord, almost continuously from 1940 onwards. I have never read or heard of a reliable quote that indicate he had any idea at all, of what supposedly went on in the concentration camps - he was content in the knowledge that Germany's internal enemys were simply thrown into prison at the slightest hint of treachery, betrayal or "defeatism".

Isn't the Holocaust is a Genocide without disctinction of race, religion and nationality, whereas the Shoah is reffered to as the Genocide of the Jewish people during WWII?

It was all bad no matter how it is recorded or reported. There is no logical way anyone can deny that mass murder was carried out by the Nazi regime. Those who try to dispute the wholesale execution of the Jewish people are themselves in denial. While we can debate the semantics of Genocide versus Holocaust we should also remember this pertinent fact:
According to a Google search :
The estimated death toll in World War II was 62 to 78 million.
This is the number we should remember.

Could it be Genocide is a more accurate description? Possibly. The Holocaust traditionally holds more to the elimination of the Jews in the concentration/extermination camps due to the gas chambers and crematories, while Genocide was being carried out throughout the War regions. Right or wrong it appears to be a divisional attempt of separating one group from all others.
Genocide : murder of an entire ethnic group: the systematic killing of all the people from a national, ethnic, or religious group, or an attempt to do this

Holocaust : 1. complete destruction by fire: complete consumption by fire, especially of a large number of human beings or animals
    2. total destruction: wholesale or mass destruction of any kind
    3. burnt offering: a sacrifice that is totally consumed by fire
Holocaust was originally used in English for a “burnt offering,” a “sacrifice completely consumed by fire” (Mark 12:33, “more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices,” in the King James Version of the Bible, was translated by William Tyndale in 1526 as “a greater thing than all holocausts and sacrifices”). John Milton is the first English writer recorded as using it in the wider sense “complete destruction by fire,” in the late 17th century, and in the succeeding centuries several precedents were set for its modern application to “nuclear destruction” and “mass murder” — Bishop Ken, for instance, wrote in 1711 “Should general Flame this World consume … An Holocaust for Fontal Sin,” and Leitch Ritchie in 1833 refers to Louis VII making “a holocaust of thirteen hundred persons in a church.” The specific application to the mass murder of the Jews by the Nazis during World War II was introduced by historians during the 1950s, probably as an equivalent to Hebrew ḥurban and shoah “catastrophe” (used in the same sense).

Hitler was present or had briefings when it came to many of the meetings about the final solution. I think Goring may have been left out in comparison to the other Nazi officials but he still had enough information about it to have done something. Goring mostly with his families urging to do some things to try and help those victimized by the Nazi's in these camps. Goring was present when the final order for the final solution was handed out, infact, he was asked to help coordinate financing. When looking at his character posthumous the controversy comes into whether Goring was antisemetic enough to do what he did if Hitler/Himmler were not with him. Regardless, Goering's involvement with rearmament and the war effort was enough for him to receive life in prison or death.

The concentration camps setup by the British for the Boer's are seen as the first time such camps were used although their has been come controversy over some Spanish camps built in South America for the natives at around the same time. The Germans responsible for colonizing Africa had setup concentration camps where natives were to be interned as well, the conditions in those camps are similar to those seen with the Boer's or even some of the Nazi camps. These German camps are seen as the first camps of their kind in the 20th century. There has been controversy over how much the government back in Germany had known about these camps. Unlike with the Nazi's, the existence of concentration camps (not death camps) were largely unknown by the German population. The Boer camps were more well known largely because of criticism made by various Dutch (?) organizations so perhaps you are correct when saying Goring heard of these camps from the Boer's first. Various church missionaries protested against these camps which I found kind of surprising since many missionaries are given the stereotypes of being indifferent to such things especially when tribes refused to convert. At least, in the "New World", perhaps things were different in the "Old World".

I think you are treading on dangerous ground here. Population statistics from pre and post-War Europe show a dramatic decline in the Jewish population of Europe. Just where do you suppose these people went? I also question your assertion that the camps were "slave labor" camps. That is certainly true for many of the work camps, but places like Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, etc were death camps, pure and simple. The Nazis kept extensive records of their activities and it is disingenuous to proclaim that these camps were other than what has been described. I would check this site for further details. The Camps

I would also suggest a reading of William Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, particularly Chapter 27, called "The New Order" for the policies of the Third Reich (they are indistinguishable from Hitler's policies) toward the Jews and those labeled "undesireable". Himmler and Goebels were chosen by Hitler to do their duties; Hitler was not off in some far away place just conducting the war. Check in Albert Speer's memoirs for his recollections of the German government's decision to sideline railcars of equipment to let trainloads of Jews be shuttled to camps.

As far as your assertions about people ignoring the genocides in Cambodia and Rwanda, I think you are mistaken. However, this is a WW2 forum, and they fall outside our area of interest.

I wasn't willing to respond to "marc780" yet. I did post a report of sorts, but was "holding my water" for a time. To compare the Aktion Reinhard Camps to any of the KZ slave camps, or even the camps of the Spanish in Cuba (1890s), the camps for the Boers, or any other camps created for control of a section of the population is ludicrous.

The Nazi attempts at industrialized genocide are unique and stand alone in the annals of human history.

I also suggest the book "Becoming Eichmann: Rethinking the Life, Crimes, and Trial of a Desk Murderer" It goes into painstaking detail over the Nazi's plan to rid Europe of the Jews. Eichmann made a career out of planning it. I honestly never thought I'd run into someone who tried to either downplay or deny the Holocaust. I stand corrected.
