The Republican guard had T-72s but they were no match for the Abrams. A tank battle happened right in front of me about two hundred yards away while we were refueling before we gave fire support to the 1st armored division for the Battle of Medina Ridge.
I want to think everybody for the kind comments. After the war I never talked about it. When I came home I never seeked out the local newspaper like every other desert storm vet did. I am a very unassuming man and I do not like to be put in the spotlight. I remember when we went to war I wanted to be remembered as someone who did their part and who was brave no matter the circumstances. I accomplished this, therefore, I can look back without any regrets. I only started to think about this experience this past summer. My business had went under due to the recession and I turned forty. It gave me time to look back and reflect on my life a little bit. There are several thoughts that come to my mind about this conflict. The regular Iraqi army units were not good soldiers. They were very unorganized and they did not have much of a fighting spirit. It was very difficult for me to respect them as soldiers. They were poorly equipped especially compared to us. The Republican Guard was a different story. They had alot of fighting spirit and they believed in their cause. I do know some of them felt differently but many of them did believe in what they were doing. They had the T-72 tank which was good but once you saw them up close there was no comparison between them and our Abrams tank. It seemed the Republican Guard had not been impacted as much by the air campaign. The Tawakalna division was very dug in when we engaged them. They were still no match for us. Another thing I would like to do is give some respect to the British 1st Armored Division as they were very good guys and they were great soldiers. They fought very well out there and they were very impressive. We interacted with them on several different occasions. They really went out of their way to interact with us and to get to know us and I appreciated that. I never got to meet any other members of the coalition forces.
This world needs to erase war from mankind. These destroyed armor can remind us of how terrible war can make mankind.
Some of my unit's(2nd armored div fwd) equipment losses during Desert Storm. Yes, we lost some Abrams tanks out there. One of them is included here. Some of these vehicles were destroyed by friendly fire and some soldiers were wounded and one killed. May he rest in peace.
This is a good site about the 1st armored division and it gives a day by day account of their desert storm experience. I believe they were the greatest armored division EVER assembled and they were amazing out there. Operation Desert StormThe 1st Armored Division Story"
