Hello, Brought Back from ETO, 703rd TD Bn. Any idea on these 3 medals and what they were awarded for?? thanks in advance
the bronze headed one is the king albert medal 1914-18 war.. the bull is the bull & legend "royaume de belgique / Koninkrijk Belgie "Ministere de agriculture 1953 , ministerie van landbouw " this one was selling on ebay. ray..
-the bull is a civilian agricultural medal from 1953 from the Ministry of Agriculture -the other one is a civilian merit medal from the town of Stavelot. -the third one is a patriotic medal from king Albert I . they are worth a few euros each.
I like the stavelot award because I wouldn't be surprised this award was offered to its liberators . For those who don't know the place it was a famous Bulge Battle area, right next Malmedy. Stavelot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia During the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, the city was the scene of severe fighting. Moreover, between 18 and 20 December 1944, soldiers belonging to the German Kampfgruppe Peiper killed more than 100 civilians (including women and very young children) in Stavelot and the surrounding area. For this and other massacres (among others of American prisoners of war) perpetrated during the same period, Peiper and some of his men would eventually have to face the Malmedy massacre trial, at which they were convicted of having committed war crimes.
Awesome info! I have been trying to pin-point where he was during the Bulge. I know the 703rd was dolled out to the 1st Inf. Div during the bulge to the area of Elsenborn ridge but specific unit info is hard to find for 1st div. I also saw B and C company was later assigned to 82nd airborne but did not see A company on thier records. I think this might be a clue if he was in Stavelot facing Peiper.... Good stuff! thanks
Glad you like the info, Stavelot , St Vith, Vielsalm are names that come to my mind, of course you can try Eupen and Malmedy also.
Thanks you all have been most helpful! Trying to track down A company, 703rd is very difficult during the bulge....3AD records are so complete for the rest of his service..... Do any of you have an idea of the item below the Stavelot medal? Bauer and Gunnewig????
