Members of this forum: I am at a loss as to the name of the boat/ship/converted yacht that was commanded by a junior Naval officer that, in early 1941, was sent sailing about the Pacifc Islands with the explicit but subtle mission of drawing fire from the Japanese providing the catalyst justifying the US to enter the war against Japan. I have tried every seach engine I can think of but the best I can do is guess incorrectly USS LANAI or USS LORELEI but that doesn't seem to connect. Can anyone help me with this conundrum? Thanks
the lanikai, links attached... http://www.ibiblio.net/hyperwar/USN/ships/misc/Lanikai.html http://www.navsource.org/archives/12/130096.htm DANFS: USS Lanikai (Yacht)
Note that the Lanikai never made contact with the IJN. However, it's amusing that this event comes to light when put next to the Pearl Harbor conspiracy theories. If FDR knew the Kido Butai was coming, when bother with a rowboat trailing its coat before the enemy?
Thanks guys for the useful information.I had read Kemp Talley's book years ago and had forgotten the name of his craft. It was an interesting premise that resulted for a pacific island cruise with some harrowing moments, good book and the eventual promotion to Captain. I am on another forumand posed the same question . Only on that one, the administrator didn't want to provoke a contentious discussion and after one response, it was closed off. Funny, I would think thee forums would be an excellent place to express these views, theories and suppositions. Anyhow I havelocated a copy of his book so I will take a refresher course. Thanks guys for taking the time.
