    Hello,

In 1993, I discovered that you could rent "The world at war" narrated by Sir Laurence Oliver. I got so fascinated that I watched in my spare time the whole 25 or so VHS cartridges in a month. Today, I just purchased the same serie in DVD format, and while I found it harder to endure than the first time, I am dedicated to watch it again. I am at the 7 DVD, and there is this flashback on Hitler emergence as a political figure, against the outdated empirial leader (the guy with a spike off it metal hat...). Fascinating !.

But there is something fondamental which I beleive is not explained. You can hear, I think its Goebbles, complain about the Jews and the Jew press. But what about ? What did the Jews and the Jews press said about the German which pissed them so off ? Why would sophisticated German, with planes, cars, industries, a modern sociaty, in 1933, be so upset about the Jews? Why would Jews, living in the same country critisized the German for ? About what ?

    Thanks for any tips!

More or less, their "crime" was that they were born. Goebbles' complaints about the Jews were propaganda, nothing more.

    Hi;
Here is an interesting theory on Herr Hitler's anti semitism; Hitler and the Holocaust
Why anti semitism in general? In my experience anti semitic people are simply jealous-like the Jewish families in my neighborhood had a lot more culture in the home. And my Jewish friends were never beat on by their parents. So...my Jewish friends tended to do well in life-a fact that caused some snapping and snarling from the usual suspects.

And not to forget that the Jews were used as scapegoats since medieval times, so it was pretty easy to build on those already existing prejudices to create a virtual enemy. And of course that many people of that time really believed in that nonsense of the different human races who are constantly fighting each other.

    In a single word....nothing.

Jewish people were scapegoats for Germany's economic and social woes between the wars. A much circulated story advised the German people to read a book called "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", in which, it was said, that Zionism had a plan to dominate the globe in an economic way.

I believe this book was a fake? Perpetrated by the Czarist secret service (The Okrana) as a justification for their own persecutions of Jewish people in Russia. Not sure on this one, but the essential element was that if you read "The Protocols" you would be convinced for yourself of a 'conspiracy' to dominate the international banking system, and by extension, the globe itself. Heady stuff.

A generic answer is easy to research. Perhaps though we should in that case ask what did the Slavs do to them, the gypsies, the disabled of german nationhood, the communists of german nationhood....What did any of them do to them.

Hitler also used Jesus Christ to persecute the jews. He personally declared himself defender of Christendom. Read Adolf Hitler of John Toland.

Technically a majority of the Germans within Germany were "German Jews", in the 1800s a mass push by the Jewish community in Germany began to basically better integrate themselves into society. Adopting the language, food, customs, intermarriage, etc were some of the things that had happened. (previously, some of this stuff was unthinkable to some members of the Jewish population) Not all Jews had done this of course but in the grand scheme of things I don't think it made much of a difference to Hitler and the Nazi's.

In reality the Jews didn't do anything bad to their fellow Germans, any Jews who did probably weren't doing it for the collective whole. Jews along with other groups, people, parties, etc were scapegoated for Germany's trouble, with a little help from Mr. Propaganda and some timely events it wasn't too hard to convince most people.

Antisemitic's aren't speaking for the entire population, people were antisemetic on various levels, most seemed to be the kinds who hated Jews but weren't the ones who would take any action against them. Bismarck was antisemetic in his later life but there is an account that after the Night of Broken Glass happened he was struck with grief as he didn't want anything like that to happen, his son agreed with Hitler and told his father that it was the right thing to do only to have the Bismarck strike at him. Within Germany there were similar attitudes, the party did various things to try to soothe the people over after that.

Antisemitism especially in Europe was nothing new as it was going on for as long as one can remember, the days of Christ even.

And as Franz Neumann wrote in 1944:

"National-Socialism, which claims to have abolished the class struggle, needs an adversary whose very existence can serve to integrate antagonistic groups within a common society. That enemy can not be too weak. If it were too weak, it would be impossible to present it to the population as its supreme enemy. Nor can it be too strong, for that would commit the Nazis to a difficult struggle against a powerful enemy. It was for that reason that the Catholic church was not promoted to the rank of supreme enemy. But the Jews fit the bill admirably. As a result, such an ideology and such anti-Semitic practices entail the extermination of the Jews, the only means to achieve an ultimate aim: the destruction of institutions, beliefs, and groups still remaining free." (F. Neumann, Behemoth, "A Paper Eichmann,"; p. 513.)

They simply needed a scapegoat and who would better fit the plan than the Jews- everyone "knew already" they were guilty of....whatever you like to name.

the funny thing is that their wealth in Germany alone was such that if they had all left the country at the same time with their money, Germany would have crumbled to pieces finacially. And even when the Kristallnacht appeared it was Göring who was furious about the costs, which ended to be paid by the Jews in the end. Surprise surprise.

If you read Mein Kampf, Hitler explains it when he's talking about WW1. After he was wounded after a gas attack, he started reading newspapers, that were anti-war and defeatist. He read the names of the editors/writers of the newspapers, and they were all Jewish. Hitler believed they were lying, that German soldiers were actually winning (I think it was around 1916/1917). He also read a lot of history, how great Germany was during Frederick and those guys, how tight nationalism was. Around him cities were filled with Slavs, Jews, other ethnics, it didn't seem German, which pissed him off. And when he was rejected from the art school, he blamed it was because the headmaster was Jewish. Therefore he concluded that all Jews controlled the media, the wealth, and high places, allowing them to control the country. Or I could be wrong, I read the book a long a time ago, it was pretty boring.

Hum! The DVD also mentionned a fight against Marxism at the same time. So the fear of the German was to loose their way of life, their identity in their own "father land". Loose to the Communist, or loose it the the Jews. Difference is, the Jews where unarmed and very closed compared to Russia. So I guess wrong time wrong place...Thanks all. I've got some watching and reading to do...

The Jews did nothing but were percieved to be responsible for the defeat of the German Empire in WWI largely due to the propagandistic efforts of the military brass which was not willing to admit that it was beaten and it had been lying to the German people about the progress of the war. The Jews did no such thing, of course. Also of interest is that some Germans also believed that communism was a front for Jewish world domination, or communism is basically a movement controlled by Jews.

As a result, Jewish-Bolshevik enemy was an important term in Nazi propaganda, civilian or military and helped the Nazis to create a linkage between communism which most German middle and upper class hated and the Jews.

Before Klara’s death in 1909 Hitler had already asked the Academy’s president, Professor Sigmund Allemand why he was not eligible to enter, and he was informed that his drawings: "Showed an unfitness for painting, and that your ability obviously lay in the field of architecture." (Hitler, Mein Kampf)

Sigmund Allemand was Jewish, but only one of the many men on the acceptance board, not all of whom were Jewish. Years later Hitler would blame his "artistic" misfortune on not being able to enter the academy because of an obvious "Jewish conspiracy." (Hitler’s Table-Talk, 1941)

This is false, Allemand was a Jew, and delivered the news, but Hitler wasn’t the only young man to get the bad news after the two days of examinations which were required, with candidates choosing from groups of themes such as "Expulsion from Paradise," "The Hunt," "Spring," "Death," "Joy," "Music," "Episode from the Deluge," and "Dance." Hitler's surviving examination drawings include Nos. 44-46.

In the classification list for the entrants, officials at the Academy wrote the following entry after Hitler's name (this still exists in Vienna):

"(Born in) Braunau-on-the-Inn, upper Austria, April 20, 1889, German, Catholic.
    Father civil servant.
    4 classes in Realschule.
    Few heads (drawn).
    Test drawing unsatisfactory.

Hitler was not alone since a total of 87 other candidates failed that examination, 52 of whom had their records also marked "test drawing unsatisfactory". This was of course his first of two failed exams, in Oct. 1907. When he was frustrated this time on the grounds that his "art" exhibited more architectural skill than artistic talent; his failing to pursue architecture was his own fault, and no-one else.

Not a "Jew conspiracy" as he later claimed in Mein Kampf. That is because he had refused to take his final graduation testing for Real Schule (knowing the areas where he was weakest were those which would be tested) in order to obtain his graduation diploma. So even though he always admitted architecture was his great love, his lack of a secondary school diploma effectively barred any pursuance of architectural studies at the technical institute of Vienna.

Most of the others who failed their entry exams in Vienna received no comment at all, so he obviously showed a "skill", just not the artistic "talent" required for the Fine Arts Academy. Of the total of 115 candidates, only 28 were accepted for first year studies. Academy standards were high and selection criteria were vigorous. At that time failure was neither uncommon nor proof of inability.

Acceptance by the Academy, however, virtually guaranteed recognition by the rather closed circle of artists in Austria and made critical and commercial success easier. Artistic careers outside Academy circles also were possible, but considerably more difficult and unusual. After his unsuccessful bid for admission, Hitler briefly took art lessons from a Viennese sculptor and made a second attempt to enter the Academy the following year. He failed yet again.

Then he took piano lessons, failed at mastering that, started writing poetry and growing his hair long, he failed to sell any poetry, and finally started making a living painting postcards and water colors which he sold through a Jewish friend who owned a gallery. He made enough money doing this to move into the Mannerheim (the best men's hostel) in Vienna, where he lived for three years before moving to Munich.

He came close to being expelled from the Mannerheim when his income bordered on the 1500 kroner a year limit. Remember he was still receiving that 240 kroner a year tax free orphans pension, so he must have been legally taking in (and reporting/paying taxes on) about 100 kroner a month, i.e. 1200 kroner per year. The Mannerheim had been established by a Jewish family, and the "powers that be" allowed the young Hitler to skirt the income limit and stay there anyway.

Hitler didn’t start hating Jews because of his failure at the Vienna Academy, nor did he begin hating Jews because his mother passed away from breast cancer while under the care of a Jewish physician. He admired and protected Dr. Eduard Bloch, even allowing the Dr. to emigrate without hindrance. He made special dispensations so the Dr. Bloch could continue to practice medicine (a unique waiver), not to wear the "yellow star", and to continue to live in his home.

Hitler's anti-Semite stand came into existance as a political expedient post-WW1, finding a suitable "scapegoat" the NSDAP party could point a finger at. At least that is how I see it, remember the fellow who nominated and awarded him both his second and first class Iron Cross medals, as well as his Wound Badge was a Jewish officer.

On this issue I've heard the Admiral Luetjens ,who went down with the Bismarck, and was portrayed in the movie "Sink the Bismarck" as an ardent Nazi, was actually married to a Jewish woman? How true is this?

The movie from what I have heard was a basterdization of his life, in reality he wasn't a die hard Nazi supporter.

I don't know about his wife but Luetjens did speak out against Nazi Antisemitism programs on various occasions.

Bismarck - Portrait of the Men Involved - Günther Lütjens

    Edit: According to this site,

    http://www.moviemistakes.com/film1167

Luetjens was half Jewish as was his wife. I haven't seen STB but already it seems like the producers/cast simply pissed on his grave if they made him out to be someone he wasn't so drastically.

Edit 2: Not to go too off topic but take this post for what you will.
