Major Richard Winters of the 101st Airborne

I just noticed this and thought we should wish MAJ Winters a happy belated bithday.

Major Richard Winters of the 101st Airborne, 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment, Easy Company turned 92 on January 21st.

Major Winters was one of the original members of Easy Company from it's inception at Camp Curahee in Georgia; he survived the Normandy Invasion; Operation Market Garden, the attempt to end WWII early by invading Holland; and The Battle of the Bulge.

During The Battle of the Bulge he and his regiment were completely surrounded and endured almost constant shelling by German artillery in sub zero temperatures without adequate cold weather gear.

Major Winters has 3 combat jump stars on his jump wings and some say he should have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his assault on Brecourt Manor where enemy artillery was firing on the allies landing on Normandy beaches. This assault is still used as an example of a textbook assault on a fixed position at West Point.

I haven't been on in a while, so I don't know if this is posted elsewhere, but I saw that Mrs. Winters passed away last week. I want to say that she must have been a hell of a woman to have been married to Richard Winters for 63 years, but I feel like that is kind of short changing her because I have a feeling he would have said he was the lucky one. Sounds like she was, indeed, an amazing woman in her own right. Some couples just show you how it should be and I think this is one of them.

I take this thread to post the photo of Major Winters which is in the museum of Utah Beach in Normandy. A small exhibition is devoted to the easy company. The original uniform from Major Winters is displayed in the museum's "Dead Man's Corner" which is located between Sainte Marie du Mont and Carentan.
A monument in honor of the Easy company was set up near the Manoir de Brécourt (between Utah Beach and Sainte Marie du Mont) where the "easy" had neutralized a German gun battery.

Nice pictures. It looks like The Band of Brothers scene, the battery neutralization, was filmed on location at Manoir de Brécourt. Guess I'll imdb that. I remember Popeye taking one in the seat during that operation.
