Hello Heinrich, To the figures let me please say as follows. Dresden's km2 in 1945 was around 65km2. About 15km2 had been hit. Within the 15km2 which represents 25% of Dresden, devastation was around 60%, referring to buildings. It is not that 60% of Dresden was destroyed. Anyhow, to me it doesn't really matter how many people got killed - every single one was one to much (well maybe not in regards to some real Nazis). The Germans had started this war and now it was payday. The good news however is that more than 10,000 people lined up to stop those 1300 Nazis (gathering from all over Europe-some might even have jetted in from the USA) from entering the inner city. Regards Kruska
scared me to read it was a 50 % .. lets forget about calculating numbers .. its only depressing . The Swedish white bread bombardments were a lot better idea
The swedish white bread bombardements : I always wondered why my dad buys a certain type of white bread ..called swedish white , propably made from swedish meal .. it has a feel to it like 7-11 supermarket factory bread and it doesnt taste as good to me as it seems to do for him ... here's why: Remember after market garden Holland got into a period thats known as the hunger winter ..Germans took all foods away and put some areas around Amsterdam under water so no food was available during winter of 44 wich was a bitter cold one .. Thus a very black period started ,..pets were already eaten , whole trees disappeared in the streets for heating ,tramrails were lifted to steal the woodblocks underneath , people were eating leathers , flower bulbs , grass and you name it what , many died from utter starvation ...stories of people going on foot to the other side of country just to get some potatoes from farmers in trade for jewelry etc ..many people simply starved and every day the dead were put on the streets in the mornings to be picked up by wheelbarrows ... and then one day a large group of airplanes appeared in the skies .. being used to the huge swarms of planes going to germany it could mean that when a swarm appeared there could be a bombing on a dutch city by mistake too as happened in Nijmegen ... it were english bombers wich were opening their bomb doors and started bombing .. but it was loads of swedish whitebread just falling from the skies ..manna from heaven ,literally .. I think there were condensed milk droppings in cans also , but most old people here only remember the bread though ..for many old people here it was their most valued memory of WW2 .. those droppings really saved thousands of people , only just in time . One can say these were the best bombings ever made in history and people are still very thankfull for that event ..maybe for the pilots it was just a simple routine mission but it made all to difference to those on the ground receiving their gifts ..
"Heinrich", here is a decent link to Operation Manna. Operation Manna The USAAF got in on it too, I also heard (or read) somewhere that many Dutch were a bit put off when some of the drops fell on their roofs and broke through them! I suppose having your house broken open by a food cannister was a bit off-putting.
Bet none of them minded if their roofs got hit by flying fastfoods at that time ..and most needed a new bathroom anyway .. those complaining were NSB/collaborators .. literally anyone else had been eating wood-a-la-creme for half a year , messy milk deli wouldn't have led to any complaints at the management . Even in Nijmegen wich was quite heavily hit by an accidental bombing there were no feelings of hatred , on the contrary .. the dead were mourned but as far i know of there never have been any fingers raised about it ..casualty of war ..
Hello Heinrich, thanks for this information - Sad to hear about those countryman of your's who starved to death. I had no idea about this or the bread bombing. Ah shi..t war. I have placed on another post of your's the question in regards to the Hunger-winter, so that question has been answered here then already. Regards Kruska
Well to be fair the original gatherings were purely an act of local rememberance by the population of Dresden, no politics to it at all. It's only been more recently that the Neo's have tried to hijack both the day and the event for political gain. I feel sorry for the decent majority who've seen their simple ceremony tainted so dishonestly.
Indeed.... The question that has to be asked is "Are commemorations like this possible WITHOUT being highjacked?"....Maybe public displays like this ought to be discontinued for the unwanted attenton they attract. If you wish to commemorate the Dresden Firestorm, you are certainly free to do this in your own home. Making a public spectacle of this does nothing more than create a disturbance. I don't see Londoners gathering to commemorate their 71 continuous nights of terror bombing, or the 31,000 odd people who paid for this with their lives. They remember simply by surviving. And we have ONE DAY a year, to remember ALL the dead of WW2... Maybe Dresden should follow suit, rather than engaging in this public spectacle.
That's a very good point, which I tend to agree with - but I'll let you explain it to the Germans. ;-)
